We lost only one tree in that windstorm, the windstorm this summer (remember that huge lightning storm that went through - very unusual for our area) caused us to loose 3 huge (like maybe 5 to 6 feet wide) maples.. Was really bummed until I went to my neighbors house and he lost at least 2 dozen 100 foot high + fir's that were in a ravine....

Dragging those maples out is going to be my winter project. But there are a bunch of widow makers in the still standing trees. Waiting for another gust to get those massive limbs down.

It would depend on what you've got on your property, but I use stumps to fill in small washout ditches and/or places where erosion is eating around bends in some of the larger ones. The stumps help to slow down the water, and the water will slowly, eventually, degrade them over time. And since they're all hiding in ditches, they're not an eyesore, either.

But like I said, if you don't have anything like that on your property, then I'm not much help.

Years ago it was a fad here to bury stumps and such and it was told if buried deep enough they did not get air, they would not rot. Might be true for they keep bringing up logs from the river bottom that has been there for years and found some old cypress logs in a pit they say are hundreds of years old.

One thing not mentioned here..hay or grass clippings. If they stumps are near your lawn and you use a grass catcher pile the clippings on it and let them dry. Look for hay that is old and not fit for feed. They will give a slow steady burn and will burn stumps much better than an full open air burn. Well they did for my wife as she burnt stumps still in the ground this way. I have been over the last few months been working in clearing up the debris left by loggers, yes pile the stumps on top of the burn pile, root ball up. Have machine there to keep stacking as you burn. kt
