Stupid Ford Trick (low tire pressure alarm)

Was at my local tire shop the other day watching them trying to deal with that on a new Ford. They said Ford uses MANY different frequencies and it also varies from model to model. They did eventually get it to read but it took a lot of trying.

Fortunately, with Jeeps, you can get a small programmer and set the warning point at any pressure you want, or even zero.

Curiously, what is this programmer that you use? I'd be interested in getting one.

I have the superchips Flashpaq. Allows you to change power programs, lighting systems, gear ratio. / speedo calibration, tons of stuff. A bit pricey at around $400. They have another that is around $125-150 last time I checked, that does just the basics like TPMS and speedo stuff. I have a 2012 jk unlimited. They have others for the TJ's.

Check the pressure in your spare tire.
My 2016 f350 did this to me and I couldn稚 figure it out until I aired up my spare

I thought about that after I had put my compressor away, LOL!

Check your owners manual, that Chinese fire drill method to reset the toms is in there. I know, crazy that its in the manual, but.. They had to, since dealers do service work.

I have a 2014 e350 as well. About half the times it went I for service and they touched the tires, they managed to forget to reset that system, meaning I either had to do it or east time taking it back.

Both my dealer and myself are glad my warranty just ran out. I've complained to the owner and ford corporate sooo many times due to that worthless dealer and their non-mechanics.

I had the truck back to the Ford dealer that I purchased the truck from once for the free oil change that they offered when I bought it. Next time around the drain plug came out stripped when I changed it myself. No way that plug should have been put back in at the dealer. No warranty to worry about so they won't see me again.

How are they going to pay for that free oil change, if you won't return and pay them to fix their damage? :p:

Somehow I doubt that the guys doing the work are the highest paid and best trained employees; yet if given a chance, I would hope that the company is professional enough to come good on their errors.

Not just a Ford thing. Our Search and Rescue unit has two GMs, a Tahoe and a Suburban. The TPMS light is lit in the dash in both vehicles - yet the pressure is right where it is supposed to be. Guys at the County shop say its just faulty TPMS units and they are tired of resetting them - so they don't.

That setting can be changed, to reflect your normal air pressure. As I was reading about the alloy rims it seemed like this thread goes hand in hand with the "#$%&@ new truck" thread. My Ranger has alloys and I dislike them for all of the reasons listed above; plus after 15 years of use I always wonder how well the lug nuts actually are seated, and if they have weakened the softer metal..
To read the actual tire pressure, on an Android there's a program called torque that will let you read that via a Bluetooth OBD2 reader. On Windows, there is also a (free) program called FORScan which will let you configure all kinds of useful things such as the pressure that the system will alarm at for the front and tires and all kinds of other fun and exciting settings.

You all know that the TPMS sensors in the wheels are battery powered with the life of the battery no more than about 5 - 7 years. So, when you buy the extra wheels off of someone or from a junk yard, chances are the sensors are just about shot. I've found a lot of tire sellers who replace the expensive sensors with standard non-TPMS stems and tape over the dash light. Costco has the lowest cost OEM replacement sensors in my area. I've heard about the horror stories from their tire guy.

BTW: The latest 'fad' in the tire shops is to install lug nuts by running them up with the nut in the gun instead of starting them by hand first. They go on but will NEVER come off and the stud snaps off when the next person tries. A little extra profit for the holiday season. "Oh my, that could be very dangerous, those car companies will do anything to make a buck". Sure...
