Stupid question. Do you have to store diesel in 5 gal YELLOW can versus RED?

Wait a few years and then look in the bottom of that metal can. Every one I have ever inspected carefully has at least some corrosion, and many have a lot of corrosion. I think the plastic fuel container is a great invention.

Excellent thought...Some of the metal cans are galvanized, and diesel fuel will attack the zinc galvanizing coating making it flake off in the can, then clog fuel filters.

Exactly why I used black pipe and fittings and copper pipe and fittings over galvanized on this fuel storage and pump setup.

I use a:
Red 5 gal can for gas .
Red 1 gal can for chain saw and weed trimmer.
White 30 gallon drum on fuel storage set up.
Blue 55 gal drum for hauling diesel.

Ditto that.. I have a blue kero can and yellow diesels... I know guys that will use black oil cans too... they are all similar for burn / fire.. so that's pretty close.. anything but the red / gas cans.. etc.

Lots of bulk tanks are white, with appropriate plaqards on them..

About the furthest I will deviate from always using the correct color coding is that I once had to buy a blue kerosene can instead of a yellow diesel one. I still have it and use it, but kero and diesel are very close. I don't use kero for anything, and have never bought any, so the chances of confusion are very low.

It's personal preference, but the logic for color coding is sound. I took it a step further.

Some people don't know that yellow is for diesel, red for gas, etc., so colors don't matter for them and the words written on the cans don't stand out too much. So, I labeled them as such:

Red cans..."Regular Gasoline"
Red cans..."2 cycle -Weedwacker, blower, chainsaw and edger 50:1"
Yellow can..."Diesel for KUBOTA"

Probably overkill, but it works.

For years before I got my tractor I spayed painted a 1 gallon plastic container yellow because I use it for my 2 cycle stuff. Now that I got a yammy I spayed painted a 5 gallon plasic yellow. I have got to remember to respray the gallon one green.

Well I'm pretty boring...

Blue 5gal: Kerosene
Multiple Yellow 5gals: Diesel
Red 5gal: Gasoline
Labeled Red 1 gals: 2-stroke
Black 3 gals: used motor oil

But I do have an old faded red 5 gal with orange flagging tape on the handle that I use for solvent waste:)

I thought it was yellow can for regular diesel and Red can for offroad diesel :)

some good points here. many years ago I couldnt find a yellow can so I have one red can I put diesel in, but I also have 5 or 6 other yellow cans for diesel. The red one is marked as diesel, but I don't use it much anymore.

I'm a 5 gallon metal fuel can kinda guy. I have the diesel ones painted yellow and red for gas.

Dave makes a good point on the corrosion issue with metal tanks. About half of my cans, (and especially 6 gallon outboard motor gas gans), do get rust and corrosion in them. I have recoated the insides with a product called Kreem. Good stuff. I do not buy the Kreem kit, just the liner liquid only since I have the other chemicals already. Those old army gerry cans will last a lifetime if they are recoated.

They took my word for it as being gas, and no one checked to see if it was gas or D. My fault, Live and Learn.
I now have RED and YELLOW containers.
+1 - With "GAS" and "DIESEL" written in big letters, respectively on both sides of each. It's hard to overestimate the power of stupidity/thoughtlessness.
Even that doesn't help sometimes :(... A month or so ago, I passed one of our trucks sitting beside the highway, about 100 yards from the fueling station. Even though "DIESEL ONLY" was all over the tank and filling tube, one of the guys put 30 gallons of gasoline in it. $150 towing charge, $250 purge lines/replace filters, to say nothing of the $115 for the gasoline (gas was only 3.85/gal then :D).
And, people wonder "why am I like that?". :(

I've 3 five gallon containers. Think one is yellow, one red and the other blue. I clearly labeled the red and blue ones "DIESEL" with a grease pencil.

Think blue is supposed to be for kero and red for gasoline.
