Hold the vise grips with the plunger rod between the jaws loosly but sized ready to clamp. Pull plunger, squeeze grips, two hands. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

"My son (26) has an 8 year old now.. He's beginning to discover just how the game works.... "

Isn't there a saying that goes something like Grandchildren are the Lord's revenge for the way your kids treated you?

Who said God doesn't have a sense of humor... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And in keeping with tradition, I'm doing just what a good GRANDFATHER should do.... Spoil the grandkids ROTTEN....(Like MY dad did with Jason...)

I have the same problem. My grease gun even has the little catch on the ram rod but it is at the handle end and not the ram end. Maybe the goofy sweat shop kid put it together backwards.

Here's what I do.. Prep the new tube of grease for insertion, both ends open and make sure the metal rim is pretty round. Then loosen the top of the grease gun cylinder. Get the handle under both of my feet like a pogo stick and then pull up on the gun. This compresses the spring and retracts the ram, left hand is now occupied. Use your right hand to thread off the top of the gun and set it down somewhere clean. Now allow the grease gun to set down on the ram about an inch. This will cause the old grease tube to pop out by about an inch. Use your right hand to extract the old tube and pitch it. Rebottom the ram with your left hand. Now grab and insert the new tube with your right hand and then grab and thread the cap back on with your right hand. Safe. Now you can step off the pogo stick and start pumping.

It sure would be nice if the ram rod's little tab would have been on the piston side. This method goes real well once you've done it a couple times. Only two hands required.

used them almost daily on the ol missle launcher. filled them weekly or so... we had 3 types. Notch on the bottom end or locking tab and or no locking that used the tubes of grease. (but never had the tubes/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif)... To fill from a 5 gal bucket we used to pop off the top with the hande and pump part and leave the rod al the way in. Push the gun into the grease while pulling back on the rod as you go. Lock into tab or notch and put on top and pump away...Quick fill. Gets some air but not to much and will usually fill at least 3/4 th full or more. Wipe off and use or store. O' if no lock hold rod with knees and one hand and cap off or have pardner capit off while you hold... or as mentioned buy a new one /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OK, now that we've got the grease gun loaded /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif, I wish you could tell me how to get all of the grease out of the tube. I have 3 different guns: <ul type="square"> [*]A mini pistol grip [*]A full size lever action [*]A pneumatic Craftsman "Professional" - yeah right /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif [/list] When using these, all of them want to leave 1/4 to 1/2 of the tube of grease in the container, but yet the plunger is all the way to the top. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Can sometimes pull the plunger back down and get more to come out, but more times than not it just floats up toward the top again. I've gotten tired of all of the half cartridges of grease laying around and too lazy to try to "merge" them together. Has gotten to the point I've been pitching some of them. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Okay, I'm weird but I couldn't help laughing at the mental picture of what happens when your foot slips off the plunger handle.

Most of the grease guns I have have the little notch near the end of the rod when it's pulled all the way out, but you have to get it ALL the way out to latch it. I clamp the tube part in the vise, then pull the rod and latch it, pop the top off the new cartridge and slide it in, screw the top on the gun then slowly let the rod back in as I pump the handle to get the air worked out. I never have a problem getting all the grease out this way, the cartridge is bone dry with just a bit left on the plunger when it's time to change it.
But, that said, I also vote for a new grease gun, and buy a quality one - it'll last longer and work better. I've bought those $8.99 ones and they mostly work OK, but a well made $34.95 Wagner will last a lifetime and be easier to use. Life is too short to use cheap tools.................
