STX38 not charging the battery

i just picked up a JD STX38 yellow deck and it's not charging the battery.It would be nice to have a wiring diagram for it.not sure of the year yet it was built.gonna trace that tomorrow.does anyone know of any issues they had with this problem ? any help appreciated ,,,,,,,,,

I dont know about that model specifically, but check the wiring to the stator, which is usually near the flywheel. There should be a plastic connector there. Most charging issues I have dealt with were corrected by replacing it.

Something else to consider checking out is the voltage regulator. It is the piece mounted to the flywheel cover I believe on the right hand side of the engine. It is about 2 1/2 inches long and had either 3 or 4 male blade connectors on it. Get a volt meter ( Fluke meter preferably) and crank the engine with the volt meter leads on the corresponding color battery posts. While the engine is running the battery should maintain around 12.56 volts. If slowly drops I would take the voltage regulator off and take it to your local John Deere dealer. There is a continuity testing procedure they can do that is found in the technical manual that will confirm either a good or a bad regulator. It wouldn't surprise me if that is your problem. If that doesn't provide a definitive answer then post again and I'll see if I can think of something else that would cause your problem. Good luck!

I think most of the STX's used Kohler engines. They have lots of good troubleshooting info. online.
