Hi everyone!
My first post here.
I'm pretty sure that I want to buy a subsoiler but I'm not sure which brand would be best for me.
A little info 1st...
43 hp, 4wd, diesel, calcium wheels, 5,000 lb tractor. Soil is medium clay loam. Not extremely heavy but I do have a presence of rocks of all sizes. Medium slope which is pretty wet late winter to mid spring. Lots of run-off at times.
Fields are mostly used for food plotting, anything from perennials (clover mostly) to annuals (rye, brassica, sunflowers).
I believe I could improve my runoff situation with a subsoiler and I've looked (on-line) at 2 brands, but I'm open to suggestions on brands, where to buy and use.
Thanks for the help:)

These are the ones I've looked at:

Everything Attachments Subsoiler I like the idea of the sheer pin.

King Kutter Professional Sub-Soiler No sheer pin but ~ $100 cheaper.

I've heard of Fred Cain but can't seem to find one. Are they still available and are they better than either of the ones above?

I would suggest getting one with a shear pin. Inexpensive insurance because It is surprising and almost amazing how fast you can pretzel steel frames when you hook something solid.

I believe everything attachments used to carry Fred Cain equipment, not sure if the company is still in business or not.

Get one with a shear pin that will trip when you hook something hidden under ground. Subsoilers will stand a tractor up before you can blink your eyes when you are cruising along and the subsoiler hooks a house sized rock.

Yeah, I agree with the sheer pin being a nice feature. But I'm wondering if there's other aspects that makes the King Kutter desirable, like steel type/thickness, welds vs bolts, cutting angle, and probably 6 other things that I don't even know to ask:eek: I'm not worrying about saving $100. I want a quality tool.

I have not heard any complaints about every thing attachments product quality. In looking at pictures the ETA subsoiler looks very similar to the Fred Cain model.

I have a KK very similar, but not identical, to the one you show. It's a well built, rugged piece that cost me around $169 @ TSC. If you can swing it, I'd get the EA shear pin protected one. With the power & weight you're applying to it, if you hook on something solid, something has to give and you don't want that something to be part of your tractor!

i realize you are asking for sub soilers....

but have you considered installing actual "field tile" kinda like a french drain setup. to help drain the water automatically.

========
some sub soilers, have option kit to install a plastic hose or wire into the ground.

and of course, i just had a page open, "can't find link now" that had a roller behind the sub soiler. and look like it had option to install a hose/wire in at same time.

In our opinion, the Fred Cain subsoiler was the best Category 1 subsoiler on the market for the money because provided shear pin protection....but, they stopped making it for some reason.

That is when we started making our EverythingAttachments Subsoiler in house, which is exactly like the Fred Cain.

Where's the shear pin on that subsoiler? Hidden under the dirt?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Sounds snarky? The KK doesn't have a shear pin, that's why I suggested the OP get one with shear protection. I am well aware of the potential for trouble with the KK, so I use it accordingly - at low speed.
You're welcome!

I didn't mean to sound snarky, I just couldn't see the SP and I thought they all had one.

I looked at the EA one and I wasn't impressed, it didn't seem as well made or as tough as yours.

Can yours be modified to bury cable or flex pipe for water?

Thanks,

From looking at the pictures it appears the shear pin is located above ground and allow the shank to pivot on the two point arms independent of the top link.

Thanks,

My bad - been having a rough day.
I've used the KK to bury flex pipe - a little wire and lots of duct tape worked fine.
Digging a starting hole helps so you can lower the point all the way before you start pulling pipe:

I ordered one from you guys and it arrived today. Seems to be a quality tool but I have one minor complaint. The bushing that the sheer pin runs through was too long. I needed to grind about 3/16" off in order to slip the hitch past it and also to put the top yoke in place. No big deal. Can't wait to use it.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Sorry!
The guys cut those by hand with a band saw rather than ordering an imported bushing in bulk. It sounds like they got a little carried away with the length on yours.
Let us know how it performs!
