Sudden smoke problem with 2520

I think that I would want it warranted like a new engine. They did enough to it.

Gord - I think that you should have that discussion with your dealer...

I'd also have a question for the shop foreman regarding the possibility of metal "floaters" in the hydraulic system that might come back to haunt you (and your ehydro tranny)!

I don't remember how many hours on your 2520 -- but, it might take a while for your new rings to seat properly into the block, given that it has some measure of wear.

My $0.02.

OK, got my 2520 back yesterday. They changed the pump, seals, bearings, pistons, etc, but not the crank, which they claim was within spec.

They changed the oils and filters and brought it back and picked up the 4610 . They used breakin oil which I need to change in 50 hrs.

I haven't had a chance to use it much yet. They said to give it a try and report back. Let's see what happens.

Didn't inquire about extending the warranty on the drivetrain. Is this something I should be asking for?

Sounds like they tried to be thorough. I would follow their advice to the letter, then treat it like the machine it is. ie: anything can break, try to operate it within it's capabilities.

Please don't misunderstand what I'm saying here, it's for everyone who's not sure what to do when your tractor won't turn completely over:

This was a seal defect, it's very possible there would be no engine damage if you hadn't tried to start it after it would only turn over partially, then you kept trying . I'm not saying you should own any responsibility, but this thread is a big reminder to everyone that reads it, when your machine is acting sick get the advice of a (tractor) doctor before you inadvertently cause further damage.

A (good) mechanic will tell you: if you're engine won't turn over completely and makes a "crunchy" noise (or a clunk noise) when it trys, don't keep trying...pull the injectors or the glow plugs (if a diesel) and then try to spin it a complete revolution with a wrench or socket if possible, or just bring it to the shop. If this was not under warranty and you found out your actions may have caused more damage.......ouch!

I've read many of your posts Gord'o, hope to read many more, and don't want you to think I'm picking on you...you are definitely one of the good guys here on TBN...don't worry to much about the repair, but save the repair invoices, and any other related receipts just in case. The crankshaft is a pretty tough part.

Good luck and best wishes....

Update for you all:

So I've used my machine for maybe 3 hrs so far and all is well. Put it to work with my new Wallenstein chipper BX42 (welcome home present for the 2520 when she came back from the hospital).

Only thing I'm noticing different is the large amount of smoke on start up. My 2520 has historically smoked quite a lot less than it does now on startup. Also, she sounds really rough until the motor warms up. All seems to be good once she's warm though.

Is this something I should be concerned about. What's the consensus on whether my dealer should be doing something about this? Also, any theories on what's causing this excessive smoking, given the known history of the machine?

GN

PS> I'll send action pics of the chipper when I get a chance.

Hiya,

I wouldn't be too concerned about a slight difference in smoke or Diesel rattle when starting. I've had pumps and injectors changed on several rigs in the past. Each of them has had slight differences with the new parts.

They could have drained the tank and used a different brand/blend of fuel than you use, that makes a difference as well because if the cetane number is lower, it will smoke more and rattle more on cold starts. Try putting your fuel additives in as you normally do and see if that resolves it.

As far as the pump, remember, there are a lot of components that go into injector pumps and theres a lot of adjustments as well. Just keep an eye on it and if it stays like it is now, that's the "new personality" of the engine, if it gets worse then look into it.
