My quality Chevy dies at 2 a.m. on the way home from church. Having planned ahead, I take the life size cardboard cutouts of Jesus and a Girl Scout, stand them in front of the peephole. I take my magic wand and press the doorbell button....

Failing to plan, is planning to fail.

Jesus best be turning some water into wine, and that girl scout better have cookies for sale...

I have a Judge and like it. But, S&W just came out with a similar gun that handles .45 ACP in addition to .410 and .45 Colt. I would like the option of a .45 ACP round.

I'm late to the party here, but I'm glad I found this thread. It confirms a lot of what I have personally already adopted as my own philosophy. I love guns, but I don't hunt (mostly because of lack of time), and I don't think they are the right option for home defense for most people. I agree with the multiple posts stating in effect, that it doesn't happen like the movies. You won't have the gun in hand when the intrusion happens. The bad guy can shoot you with your gun as easily as you can shoot him. You're not going to do any good if you leave the guy alive, and the movie always ends before the wrongful death suit that comes after the fact.

Also have you ever noticed that the bad guys can fire off a thousand rounds without hitting anything, but a hero can pop off a round over his/her shoulder on the fly and hit 9 out of 10 shots. Additionally, heroes in movies can take half a dozen rounds and keep on fighting, but bad guys die instantly if a bullet merely parts their hair.

You shouldn't pack a gun for self defense unless you know the reality of how a situation might happen, and you're planning to use it. If you use it, it won't do any good unless you shoot to stop the threat of an attack (i.e. kill). I think most people don't think it through that far.

Of course I'm much better with a small caliber rifle at long range than I am with a large caliber pistol.

Too bad...we ate all the cookies...

That's where Castle Doctrine laws (as enacted in Florida and other states...and in process to enactment in PA) are needed...to protect citizens who defend themselves from scumbag criminals and their lawyers.

Every month the NRA magazines have a page or two listing persons who have used a firearm for self defense. Some result in shooting...others, just displaying the firearm was enough to stop the assault.
Few of those folks were professional and some had little experience with firearms. But all had the guts to defend what was theirs.
I can appreciate what you wrote about how unrealistically the movies and TV (and video games) can be when it comes to the use of firearms. That's a shame, but not much to do about it.

Stopping the threat doesn't necessarily result in the death of the assailant. He or she might die...or might just give up. The point is the threat ceases.

BTW, since I brought up those NRA listings, a good percentage of the firearms used in self defense were .22's.

I pack gun and keep it handy at home because I don't like to imagine the alternative. Somebody attacks you and brakes in your home and now what? Scramble for kitchen knife, chair, baseball bat or what? The point is, every alternative is worse and much more close and personal than gun.

The attacker/intruder does not have much at stake - he can and often will back off on the sight of the gun or when he hears the shot.

My $0.02 only - you gotta fight to defend yours and if odds are bad, you gotta fight just not to give up.

By the time it takes to call 911 and for them to respond, they are just coming after the fact, either your dead or terribly hurt. I would rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6, Kimber, .45 ACP, do it like you mean it.
