What are the advantages and disadvantages of too much sulfur in fuel. Is it bad or good?

The disadvantage is that sulfur contamination of crudes creates sulfuric acid on a molar basis when combusted in an internal combustion engine, the advantage is that it really stinks.

Nothing quite like the smell of rotten eggs... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Does it hurt anything? Does it give you poor engine performance? Is it bad for your fuel system?

Try pouring sulfuric acid into your engine and see what happens to it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm interested. Most all crude oils (especially the heavier types) come out of the earth with SO2 (sulfur Di-Oxide). Not sure how that becomes H2SO4 (sulfuric acid). BobG in VA

Easy, when crude contaminated with SOx is combusted, the chemistry of combustion creates water as a byproduct, when you add the SOx you get sulfuric and sulfurous acids, in addition to the natural creation of nitric and nitrous acids from the NOx created during combustion.

Not sure why you say contaminated. It comes naturally that way. Yes I understand that water is (H2o) a byproduct of combusion but where does the other O atom come from? S02 plus H2o is only 3 O atoms. Sulfuric Acid has 4 O atoms. I'm still interested in getting an intelligent answer, besides the phrase of pouring sulfuric acid in your engine as we all know most of the byproducts get blown out of the exhaust stack. I say "Contaminated" because that is exactly what it is, a completely undesirable unwanted elemental contamination.

That is the exact reason that Sweet Crude, which is low to nonexistant with sulfur contamination is around $60 a barrel and sour crudes which are extremely high in sulfur contamination are around $20 a barrel. The sulfur contamination makes the crude oil worth LESS than the crude oil which is not contaminated with sulfur. Sweet crude can be fractionated to produce straight cut #2 diesel fuel with very high yields, whilst sour crudes don't produce hardly any straight cut #2 and require extensive hydrogenation to produce any #2.

Have you thought about SO3 yet?

Unfortunatley all the combustion by products DO NOT get blown out of the stack, rather they end up in the crankcase. Sulfuric acid in your crankcase is NOT a good idea..... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Actually I'm looking for info that I didn't already know. I'm pretty knowledgable about cat crackers and pretty well know where most of the sweet crude/sour crudes come from around the world. I just wanted to know how you got Sulfuric acid with only 3 oxygen atoms. I wasn't asking about SO3, because you said sulfuric acid. Also if it was a bad as you would seem to say it is, I'm surprised that the last time I had my hand in used motor oil (either diesel or gasoline) that I didn't pull back a burnt nub of a hand. How long would it take to burn (acid wise) you (not your crankcase) if you just set your hand in it? One day, two days, a year??? This may sound somewhat baiting, but I'm just looking for some common sense answers based on your previous statements. BobG in VA
