Sump screen jd1020

I have a new to me jd 1020 serial number 79456. I removed cover to sump screen to check and clean. The screen has metal housing and a magnet in . One end of screen is open and the other end is closed by the magnet. The closed end was next to plug. That doesn’t seem right to me. Does anyone know if this is correct. Thank you
