Sun Shade

With the hot weather upon us I have realized the need
for a Sun Shade for my GC2610. Any ideas on what to look
for and positive and negative experience would be welcome.
I was looking at a Westendorf in Massey red. Any ideas?

Someone installed a home-made canopy on my tractor before I got it. It is made with tube steel frame and heavy gauge steel sheeting. It blocks the sun and I don't need to worry about limbs. It is welded directly to the roll bar.

Downside is that it is not removable.

I looked, my is a TracShade by the Firebird company. It has held up great as I am always brushing tree limbs with it on the field edges. It has been on the tractor for about 8 years and has no cracks or any other damage. It was considerably cheaper then the metal version at the time but if your going to be doing things where you have to worry about stuff falling on your head then the metal canopy will be a good investment.

Wife got me a fiberglass JD canopy for the old 4410 a few years ago. Re-mounted it on on the 4720 upgrade - it's survived it's share of very heavy brush/tree scrapes and two contacts with the eaves of the house when I wasn't paying enough attention. Mounting supports a good place to hang stuff with bungees too. Only downside is it's very heavy and awkward to take on and off, and the folding ROPS can't fold now - front edge of the canopy sticks up almost as high as the ROPS in the 'down' position. Absolutely would not be without it though for sun, snow and rain protection. Unlike a soft top, the FG construction and JD mount is beefy enough to trailer at speed with no concern.

CCL. Nice picture of the canopy. Anyone who can do tractor time with
a beer in the drink holder has my vote...

One thing is for sure, after you have operated a tractor with a good canopy under the hot sun, you will never again want to go without one. Also, I suspect that many of the cab folks would be better off with a good canopy on smaller tractors, which dont have too much hp to spare on an AC. My own canopy, which I made about 5 years ago, is a lot better in many ways than any commercially available canopy I have seen. The problem with the store-bought ones is that they are usually too small, too heavy, too hard to put on and off, or all of the above. I made mine using a wood frame covered with canvas to minimize weight. It only weighs about 30 lbs which makes putting it on and off an easy 3- minute, 1-man job, for the times when I need to fold the ROPS to get into standard garage doors and such. Most of the store-bought ones are square across the front, while I added some taper to mine to deflect branches and it hasn't needed any repairs in 5 years even though I operate a lot in the woods and along wooded hedgerows that would consume the front corners of most factory canopys. I also made it larger, and deeper than the factory jobs, so it keeps me in the shade even when the sun is at lower angles. Of course the store bought ones also cost money, while mine was free, and made from scraps I had laying around the barn, in about 2 hours time. It even looks pretty good, with the brown-duck canvas (old boat cover) contrasting nicely with the John Deere Green.

Be nice to see a picture or two of your canopy.

Has anyone seen the diamond plate canopy's? I've been looking for a black DP for my 3320 for some time.

Are the canopys really that much help in keeping the sun off? It seems to me that it wouldn't protect much except around high noon. Other times the lower angle of the sun would allow the rays to come in under the canopy.

My JD fiberglass canopy's big, sticks out almost full width on the sides and over the steering wheel in front, and the edges turn down about 4" all around. Head's up pretty high underneath, so I'm shaded most of the time, except late afternoon. Overall, it's good protection I think - my dermatologist makes less $$$ taking BCC spots off my head and neck because of it
