Problem solved.

I took the PTO drive and shaft to a local machine shop, and in less than a day he found the part I needed, created an adapter, and welded it onto the shaft at the proper length.

And it works great. Yesterday I had several little piles just waiting to be turned into chips, and in short order, they were.

Interesting that the local orange and green dealer took 2 days to tell me what a big deal it was going to be to get the PTO fixed (and acted like I was asking them to pass a kidney stone) - then in less than 24 hours at the machine shop, it was fixed and working perfectly at a reasonable price.

Makes me thankful I did not buy a tractor from that dealer, and also thankful that I found a very capable and friendly machinist. Given my track record for breaking stuff, that's sure to be a good contact.

Glad you got it working well! Definitely want to keep in touch with that machine shop, they could be a real asset.

Stay friendly with that machine shop ! Amazing, isn't it? It was no big deal to them...... the tractor dealer didn't want to touch it. I've had a few things made at a local machine shop and i'm always impressed that it costs LESS than i expect to pay. Glad it all worked out for you.

The machine shop (Palmer Machine in Augusta, ME) contact is going to be a very good one (and already has been). The other cool thing about this place is that the son (Levi) has now taken over the business from his father, who started it ~ 50 years ago. Levi is a sharp and personable guy - and has some of the most impressive equipment I've ever seen. They have one lathe from pre WW2 that is especially cool - and massive.

I don't know anything about machine tools, and these are not the latest computer driven things you see on American Choppers, but they look like good, hard working units that must have a thousand great stories they could tell....

OTOH, that dealer has been a big disappointment to me, especially since it's where I bought my last tractor. Seems it is luck of the draw as to what kind of customer service you get. I'm not interested in playing that game, so my response is to go somewhere else where the service is more consistent, and positive.

It just never ceases to amaze me how many companies overlook the value of providing good customer service - then blame "the economy" when things go sour.

We also had a heck of a time getting the PTO attached to the tractor. This is a new tractor and the first time that anything was connected, but after lots of filing and grease (elbow and lithium), I was able to get it on and off smoothly, but only in 1 position - if I move it to the next slot it will start on, then bind up. We tried the PTO shaft on another tractor and it went on and off easily. Is it normal (or not abnormal) to have to file the PTO spline on a new tractor? I never had this problem with any of my other machines.

The connections on the PTO are tight. So when you buy a new tractor, the coat of paint on the PTO shaft makes it close to impossible to attach a PTO driven implement. Once you get the paint off the shaft, the PTO should go on smoothly. I am sure that you have figured that out by now.:)

I found one place that it goes on smoothly, so now I just line it up that way, et voila! Not sure why that's the case, but don't really care all that much.

I only have a chipper and a snowblower that use the rear PTO, and I can get bpth of them attached without any problems.

Maybe as some of the parts wear a bit, it will go on easier - but if not I can certainly live with it as is.

Hello, I'm considering the purchase of a WW Grinder Super Apache 240. I don't know much about it. The owner has no experience with it, there's no manual and there's not much on the internet. My big question is: what are the recommended power requirements. I have an old Kubota B7100. It's a 17 hp 3 cylinder diesel. I think it's rated 14 hp at the pto. Does anyone know if my tractor is too small for this chipper? And of course, I'd like to obtain a copy of the manual. And if anyone has anything good (or bad) to say about this model, I'd like to hear from you. Thanks, Jimmy (Lexington, KY)

Jimmy,

I just sent you a PM with my contact info. I can also scan and e-mail you the owner's manual as a PDF file.

Jimmy,
That chipper should work well with your 7100. I ran mine with an 18 horse Yanmar, and it worked well. At times you will need to adjust the speed at which you feed it. Some of my long (10+ feet long) sugar maple saplings would slow it down, but i think overall you will be plenty pleased with it.
