I agree.

But I do find it ridiculous our country is so lawsuit happy.

You're not the only one. But I wouldn't protest the litigious nature of our society by inviting a lawsuit!

I'm saying go ahead and hang it up. But it's basically worthless to sell used and will likely cost him money not to have it on the tractor when he sells, so I'd recommend holding onto it. I think it's funny that some people are so anti-ROPS that they want him to scrap it on principle...

I'm totally NOT anti-ROPS. And I kept mine for the reasons you listed. I'm just always amused that these discussions get absolutely blown out of proportion. Just for the heck of it, I'll Google this subject and see if I can find any evidence of any lawsuit every happening over this issue. :)

I love these discussions. Rarely surprised at where they end up. And for the ole timers of TBN, it's usually predictable where they stand. :D

Yup! We knew where this would end up right from the start.

However, I think a lot of people have a false sense of security when using the ROPS. Some people on here make it sound as if just having your ROPS on, and up, will save your life in the event of a rollover. It "may", but unless your wearing your seatbelt, I wouldn't count on it.

I don't wear my seatbelt (I always do in the car, and I'm generally a safety minded person mostly due to my career) so for me, ROPS is pretty much useless. I

f you wear a seatbelt, always use your ROPS.

One time I was fabricating some project in my shop. I took a bunch of pics and posted a thread on TBN. In the background, on one of the pics, was the ROPS for my JD2210 hanging on the wall. That generated 2 pages of as Papaperk would say "good ole fearmongering" before we got back to the subject at hand. I love these discussions. Rarely surprised at where they end up. And for the ole timers of TBN, it's usually predictable where they stand. :D

Well said!

.

I believe you are correct, if you don't have a ROPS or don't have it up, don't wear a seatbelt.

I'd be trimming those branches, or mowing further away from them before I remove the ROPS.

This idea works for me. Keep the ROPS and mow further out. I mow with two tractors with a small 38" JD to squeeze between and around tight trees. It only takes a few extra minutes. Then I have a 7' mower to fly through the open spaces.

I never sell any tractor part that would go with the tractor if I sold it. Buyers can be unpredictable and either totally not care about something removed or totally lose interest if something like a factory wrench or decal is missing.

My old neighbor used to mow too tight under his apple trees and was always hitting branches, etc. All was OK until he got really old and hung up on a branch and nearly cut his foot off. He would have but old age caused him to put the blade on backwards. That error saved his foot and probably his life.

Yeah, I totally agree with that. Not saying throw away your ROPS. Just saying in some cases it's just barely better than none at all. And in the case of my Kubota it will not keep the tractor from rolling onto it's back. It's simply not tall enough to do that. Read an interesting article about the testing process. The ROPS is required to be strong enough to carry the weight of the tractor in a complete roll over. To get that strength mine had to be shortened to it's existing height. Shortening it shortened my lifespan, but it met the governmental requirement of carrying the tractor. Look at this picture and tell me where the "safe zone" is for me as an operator if my tractor rolls over. Draw an imaginary line from the top of the ROPS to the top of my front tire.

And in my case, as I stated above, I realize my Kubota's ROPS will not provide me with a "safe place" to be in a rollover. So I consider it non-existant. I never wear the seatbelt. And I also drive my tractor as if it doesn't have a ROPS, avoiding the chance of rollover religiously. And I'm in steep timber terrain 80% of operation time and countless times have been on 3 wheels.
