Well, weatherman says 12 - 24 inches of snow inbound for tonight here in central VA, so I guess it's about time to wake up the old 790, take off the FEL and put on the plow----always a pain in my butt. Seems like every time I do it, we're virtually guaranteed to get 0.0010" of snow. Still, the plow is so much better than the FEL or rear blade for snow...just gotta do it.

And unlike all you Eskimos out there with your fancy heated cabs, I'll be freezin' my butt off!! ;)

First, I'll be puttin' a couple pallets of landscape stone in the Dodge....

...and picture attached of my 790's renovated home...

Now don't you think we always had a cab or tractor up here. I,m sure most of us did our share of shoveling by hand before we put are hand on a heated tractor, I know I did, and yes, I did freeze my butt off and fingers and toes and......:p

Snow it at the TOP of my Santa list. So far Santa has let me down, but I suppose the year is still early.

Your post concerns me because this will be the first year in a new house with a new tractor. Whatever we get I only have an FEL and 3PH blade. I will be clearing hard surface, but I was told a blower doesn't work with our wet heavy "snow" that is often more sleet/ice.

My gameplan is to take a pittiful St. Louis 1" snow accumulation from 200 yards of road and stack it 4-5 foot deep someplace. Then have fun with sleds and forts and all the stuff I used to be able to do when I was a kid!:cool::cool:

I am in Bedford (south of the OP) and we are suppose to get the same storm.. I went out yesterday and topped off the tractor fuel and attached the rear blade.. No cab here either just some insulated overalls.. should be fun -> NOT

Check out the attached pic of my snow-clearing set-up.

The front blade works reasonably well. I was a little worried after I flipped my rear tires around that it would mess with the snow removal---that is, my rear tires would be wider than the path cleared by the front blade. This would be similar to having your front tires wider than the FEL when driving into a pile of loose dirt. But, I don't see that as a problem unless the snow is really deep. [OK, let me qualify that for you Northeners. ;) That means more than 8" in Virginia. lol] After all, when the front blade is angled, it has a much narrower footprint than the stock tire set-up anyway.

stlbill, notice I have the 3PH blade on there, too. I tell ya, it does a great job of clearing snow. In fact, I'd say it's better than the front blade. I guess the main difference is that on a gravel road, a rear blade will tear up the gravel, whereas the front blade will float on the skids. Also, I could see situations where the snow was pretty deep and you'd want to clear it out of the way instead of running over it and then clearing it. Otherwise, I think your set-up would be fine.

OK, Brian, you got me. What's the OP?

Looks like over 8 inches near Lovingston so far tonight. I don't knowhow well my 4310 w/430 loader and 6 foot rear blade is going to do tomorrow. No cab for me either. even a canopy would be a welcome addition right now.

Looks like this one is going to miss us altogether, but what I was just looking at shows western VA in the 12-18" area tonight.

I'm jealous. All I can see in the weather report is a green Christmas. On the other hand cold and no snow means good ice on the bay.
BTW, no cab here either.
