When searching to buy land I spent some time in the deeds office. It can be very interesting what one finds out in the Deed Books, GIS office and talking to the county employees. 
I saw quite a few line descriptions that were "vague." Sycamore trees by the river that marked a corner. The one that really made me laugh was the rock used as a marker. It was in the middle of a road. I have never heard of the road so I think the road has disappeared. I can't imagine trying to find a rock in the middle of a gravel road. And on a missing road.
