syn oil not good for older engines

"Do realize that not all synthetics share the same base componet. Mobil's synthetic has been around before the 80's if memory serves me correct. Did Mobil sell a product to the public that was destroying their gaskets and seals? "

Could have been, sales are sales. Did Arco sell Graphite oil stuff/junk ? Yes. How many people bought Yugo's ? How many carburators did gasahol foul up ?

Mobil is in it for the money not to make your engine last longer.

( It might be that for an engine that never used synthetic oil that switching to it now would cause problems. Sort of like when it is said that if you've never changed the transmission fluid on a high mileage, not to start changing it)

Or using detergent oil in an old engine that has never seen detergent oil.

Oh no! If I had only known this in 1980. I bought a 1978 VW Rabbit with 70k and switched to Mobil 1. I could have told the guy that bought it from me with 270 K miles on the od., that the oil is about to ruin the engine. The guilt .OH, the shame of it all !

Is there a problem with Mobil being in it for the money? As far as whether it is more beneficial for your engine then conventional oils, I don't know, but then, I really don't believe you do either. Scientific evidence will be my source for a fair evaluation. The evidence thus far without a doubt shows better low temperature characteristics.

Soundguy,

How much is the snake oil, have some muffler bearing problems I need to take care of! LOL /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good info, I used to be a petroleum distribution engineer for Mobil when Mobil 1 came out and they did have some engine warnings, they also stated back then that they could go 25K without and oil change, but not anymore!

Doesn't matter whowas talked to.

If you send an email to cust. service.. and that is the email you get back.. that is the companies 'official' position on the subject.. whether it is bad info or not.

Obviously at least at some time there was a problem. It was acknowledged here by some that were privy to it.

It is posts like the one I'm replying to, and and the other sarcastic post about the VW that I was refering to in my first post. Those that want to completly overlook any negative effects of a syn. oil. Fanaticism about a product...at any level should be at least provoke a " caution.. proceed carefully' sign.."

Soundguy,
Remember you are degrading the sacred subject of synthetic lubricants /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Many have fallen prey to the mind numbing monster of advertising.
Remember always do what anyone on TV says to do.

That is one reason I like summer longer days to be outside doing stuff and maybe only 1 hour or so of TV a day.

I don't think you give folks enough credit Slowrev. I don't use synthetic oil but it's interesting that even the US automakers are using synthetics in items like the rear end of trucks. Have they been watching to much TV? While there are folks as Soundguy refers to as fanatics, you border on conspiratorial. You have no scientific proof that synthetic oil does not have beneficial qualities yet ridicule those who use it. Why?

I agree.

I pretty much only watch the various star trek tv series, and the 2 stargate shows.. That's channel 39 on my cable..
( sci-fi ) channel. Those two numbers are worn off the remote. Other than that.. I, similar to you, am outside working and getting grease or sweaty...

Your postr reminds me of a card game I once saw.. 'Illuminati' in the game there was a card called 'orbital mind control lasers'.. or something to that effect... the funny by-line at the bottom of the card aluded to the fact that people could be controlle dby such.. etc.. I feel the same way about marketing.. I pretty much look at everything with 'optimystic skepticism'. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
