They are having a big discussion on synthetic air on the rv forum and I thought I would enquire as to how many of you are using it in your tractor tires. I have heard spurious claims that it would add 5hp to the tractor, speed up mowing time and make you more attractive to the ladies.
I thought I might wait until spring to try the synthetic air as I am getting ready to put in the winter air. I know there are some that will say that abc air is the best and xyz is junk, but just trying to get a good assessment on the new synthetic air for tractor use.

I think the synthetic air is a waste of money as the temperature rating isn't that much better than standard air. And I don't change the air in my tires. I just use multi-viscosity air and leave it in year round. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I will only use Amsoil air in my tires. It has much better TNP (Total Nitrogen Percentage) and is the only one to my knowledge that includes the Argon additive package.

I've found that 'organic' air is the best to use by far. It doesn't pollute and is non-toxic if it leaks out.

Now I was discussing this with Ralph the Natural Gardener a while back, he liked the organic air too, but felt more comfortable and less constrained using 'natural' air. I believe it was Junkman who used 'recycled' air exclusively in his tractor. Of course Dargo preferred imported bottled air from a spring somewhere located deep in an exclusive resort. There is a case to be made for mountain air, it is less dense so if you are using your tractor for mowing then it weighs less and resolves rutting problems. Tropical air, on the other hand, is far more dense and improves traction by adding weight down low on your tractor, I don't like the moisture content of the tropical air and feel it might lead to premature rusting of your rims.

For me I'll stick with organic air, preferably from a high desert area so it is both light and dry. Did I mention that the lovely Mrs_Bob thinks the whole idea is a bunch of hot air? Women just don't get "it."

Sheesh... I just get whichever air is on sale.... If it's airy I use it...

I think I'll go ponder this whole air situation...

I've found that by regularly rotating the air in my tires I get much better air life without too much sacrifice in ride quality and performance.

Can anyone recommend a good filter for my tire air though?

Rob, that is the beauty of organic air. No pre-filter is needed. Saves on tool costs so you can buy more implements.

Oh no, all you guys are full of hot

air /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. The best and only thing to use is H2Air. With the hydrogen added you can run R1 tires on very damp ground and not worry about rutting. Also, since hydrogen transfer heat 6 times better than regular air, your tires will last longer due to running cooler. And lets not forget that H2 was what made the Hindenburg lighter than air, so you could use a 3500# trailer instead of that 12K, and that should even increase your fuel mileage. One word of caution, Keep your O/A torch setup away from your H2 tank. Seems when H2 and O2 mix, it becomes rocket fuel. If that does happen though, pipe it into your fuel tank, it burns very clean and is environmentally friendly /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

John, I really think you need to dig into the whole concept of organic air.

I would also be remiss if I didn't mention that I try to avoid Swiss Air as it is usually full of holes. Hooters Air, on the other hand, has to be changed as it will cause drooping if it gets old, unless you get the silicone enhanced version, that seems to defy gravity no matter what the age (but it costs more and usually is attached to a high maintainence tractor model).

Some valid points have been brought up. How I got onto the synthetic air was a dialog I had with my bride. I was on the tractor and stopped by the garden and spoke with my wife. In the ensuing intellectual conversation, I asked if she thought my tractor was sexy. She mumbled something I could not hear and then said your full of hot air. This concerned me as I did not realize the air in my tires was hot. So I started looking at the new synthetic air as it supposedly has better heat tolerance. Leave it to a woman to home in on a problem that I had completely overlooked.

I'm sorry Bob, I have to insist that H2Air is absolutely the best /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. When that organic air starts rotting, man what a stench! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif The byproducts released can actually dissolve silicon! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You guys are completely crazy! If I could afford synthetic air I wouldn't put it in no stinking tractor tire(they do smell pretty bad too). As bad as our natural air is here I would suck it down myself. And I don't care what you say about women and childern first. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If I switch to synthetic air, will I need to buy a special gauge to check the pressure? I heard you can only get the synthetic in metric.

Just got back from a two day camping trip and it was entertaining to say the least. Synthetic Air is ahead with the rv'ers, but the tractor bunch is still lagging behind. There were a group of S.I.N. (synthetic is nice) members trying to convert the non-sinners. Converts to sin seem to be somewhat fanatical in their approach and seemed to party loud and hard.
Then there were the greenies with their natural air. They also had fruit flavored air. They seemed to attract the bees and flies more than the other campers. A big honkin, motor home showed up at the camp ground. He sneered at the common folk using PA (plain air) as he used imported air, which comes from the first exhaled breath of newborn Siberian Yaks. The most fun to watch was the ole boy that put helium in his tires. The trailer was floating about a foot off the ground but was soon back on terra firma. The kids in the camp ground would sneak up to the trailer and release the helium and breath it in so they could talk like chipmunks. Leaving the camp ground I heard some blue air as a sinner lost the hose on his black water tank about half way through the process. I really don't think I would want to put blue air in my tractor tires, If you ever had a flat you would get a cussing at the same time. Just some musings of an old geezer who might give sin a try.

As far as I'm concerned, the only real issue is metric air vs. standard air. Metric air is a MUST for imported tractors.

Most savvy vintage tractor restorers will hunt far and wide for old air, pumped from old tires to keep their tractors as accurate as possible.

Now for the use of synthetic air, I only use it with radial tires. No benefit with bias ply's.

I always used nitrogen in the tires on my corvette. The pressure won't change with the hot and cold and it won't leak out through the pores in the tires like air.

ROFLMAO /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Are ya'lls tractors broke? You've got way to much time on your hands.Just keep the OE air in the tires and by all means go out and use it.

Don't worry, nothings going to be alrite

I've heard warnings not to use either synthetic or natural air that was bottled in the Southern Hemisphere. Never got an explanation as to why but I am careful to avoid it.

It causes your tractor tires to spin in the opposite direction.
