Good ideas, Billy, thanks!

Mike, go to Wally World and buy one of those clear plastic funnels with the liquid graduations on the side. You can fill them to your desired quantity by closing the discharge end of the funnel (screw-turn mechanism). Then when you've measured it out, put the discharge end in your crankcase fller and screw the stopper open. I have 2 of these: one for oil, one for fuel additives.

I am wondering if I can run this in my gasoline car. (Toyota 4cyl) http://members.cox.net/toyota904/engine%20timing%20belt2.jpg
The owners manual calls for 5w30 from -20 to 50 degrees. Would the Rotella Synthetic have any issues running in southern heat?
While I think they brag about low temp capabilities, their web page says nothing about high temperatures.

Well I'm not sure what's going on here in Michigan, but I checked my local Walmart and they want $18.88 a gallon for Rotella T. Anyone else in Michigan price this out or have an idea why it's so much higher than JohnM3 and others have found elsewhere?

The price is up in all Wal-Marts and Super Wal-Marts. I did talk to a Rotella marketing manager and he said Wal-Mart was selling Rotella synthetic at a special price.

I'm gonna use this in the next few months... based on the odds of having a "nasty" Northeast winter coming due...
So, how'd your test turn out?

UPDATE:

Rotella synthetic has went back down to $12.84 a gallon, at Wal Mart

Hi Mike!,

Well, we sure had some “Winter” this past Winter…! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I’m definitely sold on using synthetic engine oil for Winter use… that green girl turned over & started @ -15 below… and didn’t know any difference… and that’s with no block heater plugged in… (don’t have one to plug in! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif) (just air-intake preheat which is also mandatory at those temps) (though didn’t want to start on a couple mid 20’s days pre-preheat install days) /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I even put semi-synthetic (didn’t have 5w-20 in full synthetic avail.) in the Wife’s Honda this Winter… and she started up every time and never missed a beat… (but that could be, it’s a Honda!)

So… nothing scientific to tell ya… but take my word on it… full synthetic engine oil does make a big difference for easier starts here in the Northeast Winter climate…

I have only put about 60 or 70 hours on the Deere since that oil change. Because I change my oil every 250 hours it will be mid summer or so before I will do that and conclude my “non-scientific seat-of-the-pants” synthetic oil test… /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Not sure if you have already seen this but here is some more John Deere "poop" on their oils and lubricants. By the way, did you guys realize that John Deere 15W-40 Plus 50 was rated CI-4 for egr system equipped diesels? Now you can use it in the VW TDI. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Chief

Thanks for the PDF link. Was hard with my 32k transfer rate but worth it. Now that JD is CI-4 I can put it back on my list of oils for the TDI. Right now I'm using Schaeffer's 15w-40 Synthetic Blend and catching hell about it over at http://www.tdiclub.com and http://www.bobistheoilguy.com.

If the Schaeffer's pans out like I think it will I'll stick with it due to its cost advantage over JD, Delvac 1 and Amsoil.

Check this out http://oilstudy.spacebears.com these guys are running various synthetic oils and doing analysis every 1000 miles to see how long they really last. Too bad they aren't doing tractors or TDIs.
