They bundle the normal census questions with questions that will aid merchants and companies.

American Community Survey - Wikipedia

It is a total disregard against the peoples right to keep under the radar. Even when you do that, some of us are subject to identity theft and can be a real pain in the rump. I don't mind answering what I felt were correct census questions but I'm not revealing my lifestyle just to help the business world.

As if every burp and fart heard or felt online isn’t already tracked.

Wait until you see the 2020 census. The amount of personal questions were astounding! We were picked as an early trial and no, there is no way all of those questions should be answered. One example: They have no business asking when you leave the house or come home from work. They acknowledge that the info will be given to the world to boost economic growth. What maintenance my house needs? Yeah, I can just imagine all the ads coming in the mail for windows and siding.

Sounds like you got a disguised survey sent out by your local burglar. :)

For those very reasons I DO NOT participate in census taking.

After 7,600 posts on T-B-N I find it baffling how few new members specify their location.

I find it difficult, sometimes impossible, to post solid information without knowing where the OP will operate the tractor.

Here are my reasons for wanting OP location.

ALTIITUDE - Tractors lose 3% of power for every 1,000' altitude increase, over 1,500' Sometimes twenty posts will be made advising on tractor horsepower, then we find OP is a 6,500 feet altitude and is considering a low power, naturally aspirated tractor.

WEATHER - ESPECIALLY SNOW - Blowing snow and mowing are the two tasks that require considerable engine power. If we know an OP is in Buffalo, NY rather than Key West, FL snow needs are apparent.

WEATHER - Large swathes of the country have a continental climate, four seasons, with great temperature variations.
Areas near the coast have varying maritime climates.

PRICING - Tractor and implement pricing and dealer service pricing varies a great deal. Most reasonable prices are usually in the south. Prices along the west coast and in the northeast are usually highest. Some states exempt agriculture and forestry equipment from state sales taxes. Florida is one example.

IMPLEMENTS - Availability of implements brands are regional, not national. ie: CountyLine, Rural King, etc.

SOIL AND GROWING SEASON - Whether game food plots or market crops, soil and length of growing season(s) in important. Soil type influences tire selection.

Everyone here has a screen name, as anonymous as they like. Any other profile information is contributed voluntarily, such as age and tractor brand/model. Relative to the massive data heists reported so often, with names, address, Social Security and credit card numbers stolen, this site is nearly anonymous.

What other reasons exist to encourage new members to complete the T-B-N PROFILE WITH SOME FORM OF THEIR LOCATION?

AGREED!

I've not cataloged a detailed count but, I'd guess 50% of the time when posting an answer to a logistical question/situation I look at the person's location that I'm responding to.

Although rather deeply detailed I think Jeff's points are valid. I'm sure with 30 minutes of searching I can find half a dozen current threads where location is important.

One in particular that I'm involved in right now where the OP has been repeatedly asked his location with definite relevance involved. So far he's ignoring the request while still asking for more input. Go figure..... :D

I see absolutely no use for any to post a location unless they simply choose to. Perhaps there should be a rule prohibiting asking, especially more than once?

Nonsense...again, unless someone has personal local experience how would they know the particulars of an unfamiliar area?...or have you lived and operated a tractor in every location on the planet too?

I traveled thirty states in the wine business for thirty years. Visited most other states incidentally except the northern tier in the east. There are few cities of 50,000 or more population where I have not sold wine account to account or surveyed stores as the guest of a distributor sales person.

Plenty of time to discuss the local economy and look over the area during visits. I will ever remember the day a sales person arranged a formal tasting for two of sixteen brands of Lebanon Bologna in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Funny and tasty.

So, what? You've been in some stores. I've been to 49 states for one reason or another, mostly in rural or tourist areas. Doesn't make me think I know the soil content or how someone might use a tractor.

The only one I can remember recently that location was truly relevant was a thread about an attachment where location only became relevant was when a TBN advertiser was pitching one of their (IMO overpriced) implements after posting they had to post a follow up stating that they did not ship to the OP's location...

Like I previously stated...99.9% of the time if location is logically germane it is supplied in the OP or subsequent posts...

Not familiar with the thread but I would guess that the OP does not deem the location relevant...or the information they are seeking is not relevant...

hypothetically...(much of Jeff's argument is WX related) but when a member asks a question say about burying a water line ...even with a location given...a responder is likely to ask what the depth of the freeze line is rather than look it up for themselves based on the given location profile...

Being curious is human nature...I think it is more likely a member is more interested in another members location for demographic/philosophical reasons rather than actual relevance to the query...
