I am with Jeff. I have seen many, many examples of location helping an OP zero in on a more informed decision. Is it necessary? No. Will the OP likely get better input if it is provided (at least state and closest city center) yes. Many examples of TBNers helping someone not as internet savy locate dealers in their areas. Lots of local craigslist and tractorhouse searches by TBNers that help folks get a better estimate for used value. Others TBNers notice they live close to an OP and can provide very detailed information (which might otherwise be unknown to OP) about soil conditions, use of certain implements in the area, and which dealers are good to work with.

When I originally posted, I not only included my city/state, but also my altitude. I got lots of great feedback, and actually met 2 local CO folks that helped me tremendously. Sorry, but to me it was invaluable to share.

The other day someone posted about Tyler, TX (just bought 6 acres there...thinking of a ZT or small CUT). My father lives in Tyler so I immediately knew the soil conditions (sandy loam) and that cows in the area always rut up the pasture. I would not have a ZT for mowing pasture in Tyler...just too dusty and bumpy.

Sorry but I think it is important if you want the best possible input from fellow TBNers. Now if you don't want to share, you certainly don't have to. I don't want everyone to think they must post it. We all have our reasons.

So, what? You've been in some stores. I've been to 49 states for one reason or another, mostly in rural or tourist areas. Doesn't make me think I know the soil content or how someone might use a tractor.

Mayhap, but there might be the one person on the forums (Maybe even you Diggin It) that knows the exact conditions if an OP posts their location.

Check this one out. This was a fantastic example of how location matters. There are 3 or 4 TBNers from the same area in Washington that are helping this guy with a number of questions. Lots of location specific info being taken into consideration.

ADDITION TO POST #1

USED TRACTORS - When the OP posts a location OP may be informed of used tractors nearby or provided local tractor listings from Craig's List, eBay, TractorHouse, Machinery Peter or other sites.

I had a police officer in Tampa buy a tractor from my local Kubota dealer after I provided a line on a primo condition Kubota L3240. Tampa to Fanning Springs = 125 miles.

I traveled thirty states in the wine business for thirty years. Visited most other states incidentally except the northern tier in the east. There are few cities of 50,000 or more population where I have not sold wine account to account or surveyed stores as the guest of a distributor sales person.

Plenty of time to discuss the local economy and look over the area during visits. I will ever remember the day a sales woman arranged a tasting of sixteen brands of Lebanon Bologna for me in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

LMAO...this is so off the wall and irrelevant it's funny...!

Now if you said you personally grew grapes in 30 different states for 30 years...

Also...do you really think you've gleaned a world of information about soil types, implement prices etc., etc...peddling wine in the city limits of 50k or more people?...

Not even close...the OP gives the location in the first sentence...and exact location is hardly germane to the questions posed...Geeze!

I see absolutely no use for any to post a location unless they simply choose to. Perhaps there should be a rule prohibiting asking, especially more than once?

This is a good one.

I was in a conversation with you about a specific geographic location situation. You were very opinionated about the subject. I asked where you were located thinking maybe you were directly affected. Your reply was "Why are you going to come and visit me?"

Very mature.

So now I pay little attention to your comments in regards to anything involving location. To quote a great movie line "this is how he wants it. So this is how he gets it." :D

The only one I can remember recently that location was truly relevant was a thread about an attachment where location only became relevant was when a TBN advertiser was pitching one of their (IMO overpriced) implements after posting they had to post a follow up stating that they did not ship to the OP's location...

Like I previously stated...99.9% of the time if location is logically germane it is supplied in the OP or subsequent posts...

Not familiar with the thread but I would guess that the OP does not deem the location relevant...or the information they are seeking is not relevant...

hypothetically...(much of Jeff's argument is WX related) but when a member asks a question say about burying a water line ...even with a location given...a responder is likely to ask what the depth of the freeze line is rather than look it up for themselves based on the given location profile...

Being curious is human nature...I think it is more likely a member is more interested in another members location for demographic/philosophical reasons rather than actual relevance to the query...

I think you think not divulging your location gives you a sense of aloofness. Is that a word? :)

So I put you with Diggin It. Your responses often lack merit because of unknown location.

See above movie line. :D

Please explain the rationale of thinking that because a member's profile does not reveal a physical location their missives have no merit?...just curious:D

I knew that would require explaining for you. Let's see if I can simplify it for you......

Assume you don't know my location....

"I'm looking to purchase a used 50hp 4wd gear drive low hours JD tractor. What would be a reasonable cost to start with?
