Tommy and Greg - Interesting bantering, BUT I STILL HAVE ISSUES and need some help. I cleaned everything, put it all back together, and now the engine turns over, but it won't fire up:confused:

There were three wires running from the plugs on the dash to the front end of my tractor that look like they were cut, not pulled off something, so I don't know what's going on. One's green, one white, and one blue?????

HELP!!!

I'm sorry to say that I really don't understand how you progress from one problem to another so quickly. When did this become an "it won't fire up" issue? What "plugs on the dash"? What's on the distant end of the mysterious green and white and blue wires?

Other than turning the starter motor, there is no electricity involved in starting your diesel. Problems like that usually turn out to be fuel-related. Did you shut off the fuel petcock for any reason? Did you change a fuel filter? Did you run out of fuel?

As for your original issue(s), I believe I will continue my recommendation to consult an auto-electric shop

I'm not a mechanic, for one, and two, I have no technical training, nor any aspirations to acquire them.

If I knew where the wires were supposed to go, I'd have reconnected them (duh). The question was whether there could be a correlation with my wiring adventures and the engine starting.

Yes, the tank is full of fuel, and no, the valve is not closed.

As you can probably surmise, my forte is more towards writing. The tractor is a hobby that I happen to break quite often due to my aggressive play!

Jeff - I ask questions as a part of the troubleshooting process. When answers are not forthcoming - or unclear - the process stalls.

Let me try this wire thing again. You asked about three unknown wires. Cut or not, a wire has to have two ends. You found one - so what's at the other end (of each)? Answer that, and we might be able to surmise where the "cut" ends go.

But as I stated, these wires almost certainly have nothing to do with a diesel engine that won't "fire up". For that, you still owe me a few more answers. Didja run outa fuel before refilling the tank? Change a fuel filter?
New questions: didja do anything at all to the fuel delivery system?
Is there water in the sediment bowl?
Is there anything in the sediment bowl?
Is the fuel filter full?
Is your fuel cut-off lever stuck?
Is your compression release stuck?

Greg,

I actually got up and running...no idea why it wouldn't the day before.

I put it all together nice-and-pretty, so I won't be pursuing the tach and hour meter issue at this time. They still don't work, but for now I'll simply keep a log of hours run. RPM are monitored by my ears.

Thanks.
