Looks like a good idea. Calibration to read the correct RPM could be a little tricky.

Let's be positive now, it took me a while to find this little rascal.

Besides, it will look so much better on your instrument panel than a drawing of a Tach. LOL

I have a Sears DGT 6000 w/Kohler 27hp Command and it has a little electric Tach, but I haven't quite been able to figure out how it works unless it picks up off of the magnito/flywheel.

Anyway, since this one says Diesel on the face it looks a little more official.

But, OUCH, the $114.95 and then there's shipping.

However, what I would suggest before making a purchase is to print out the .pdf file http://tinyurl.com/97v33 and take the Installation Instructions to your local mechanic
(or perhaps Sears) and see if they have the electronics to set the calibration .

I remember the salesman telling me to push the throttle forward as far as it would go then bump it back just a bit and that should put you right in the RPM range you should be for the hydraulics and PTO to work right. he he he.

I found another Tach which didn't specify the need for calibration.

Although I haven't measured the diameter of the fuel gauge, it should fit in the panel without much modification.

Here is a "hand held" tach. Go to eastwood.com and look at part # 25177. It could be use to set fixed RPM points on your throttle lever.

Has anyone added a tach to a factory "tach-less" machine?
I am just curious to know how it worked.
I was considering adding a tach to my GC2310, but then someone asked me why? And I really could not answer the question. This person has various tractors and equipment and he said that tachometers really serve no purpose for him. He simply stated "if you need more power, increase the throttle. If the machine is working fine at the speed you have set, leave it alone." The more I think about it, the more I think he is right. Lawn mowers don't come with tachs, after a while you get the feel for the machine and know where it likes to run. I like to think that I am starting to get that feel with my GC2310 and maybe instead of setting the tach at a certain number I will develop a sense or feel for where my tractor "likes" to run.
As of right now, the only advantage I can think of is that if I ask my wife to mow the lawn I can tell her to set the tach to 2800 rpm and start mowing. But it is still just a reference point. I could probably also tell her to give it half throttle and she would probably be within a couple hundred RPM every time she mowed the lawn.
I know you can also estimate your speed based on RPM, but how is that helpful? Maybe it is for tilling?
I am sure there are other benefits and that is why I am bringing it up here.
So, if you have good uses for your tach lets hear about them, because right now, I can not think of a reason to have one....

I have intended for some time to add a tach to my GC2300. Why would I do such a thing? My main reason (other than to fill a blank spot on the dash) is probably for maintenance. I do try to keep the air filter clean but I have lost power when running under dusty conditions.

Being able to see that the engine is keeping up it's rpms while I am working under "stressful" conditions certainly wouldn't be a bad thing. I don't consider mowing to be stressful (at least not to the tractor) but when I am moving buckets full of topsoil or gravel or tilling some heavy clay that is another issue and the loss of some revs in that situation (for whatever reason) can make a difference.

If my ears were good enough to discern a few rpm loss, then maybe I wouldn't deem a tach necessary.
