Snowing here in East Texas today, good day to do a little research on finish mowers. Seems blade tip speed is the key factor in a good smooth cut. Have calculated the 5' Harbor Freight mower to be 15,002 fpm at 540 pto speed. Here are some others for what it is worth: Landpride 5' is 18,195 fpm, Farm King 5' is 15,829, Woods 5' is 18,030 fpm, Frontier is 14,763 fpm. I know from experience what bearings the Harbor Freight mower uses. They are 6205. Some of these other mowers use that bearing and some use a 6206. The Harbor Freight mower has a 1:2.83 gearbox with a 7-7/8" drive pulley and 4-1/4" driven pulleys. Some of the other brands have the 1;2.83 gearbox but change the pulley size for increased blade tip speed. The Farm King has a 1:1.93 gearbox but 12" drive and 4-1/2" driven pulleys. Also blade length figures into the puzzle and these mowers vary on that also. The Harbor Freight is actually a 57 -7/8" cut and most of these others are a 60" cut. Some blades overlap more than others. OK, I find all this interesting, but really not worth a lot. You folks in the East look out this is headed your way.
