Is it serious, YES!

But... thank you blessings that this happened in our country.

We as Americans take SO MUCH for granted.

The fact that we can be online discussing (sp?) 10k of more better on "equipment" is a testament to that fact.

Live in a "third world country" and you will never take for granted what you have here.

P.S Ilike the guy who had the sign "you loot, I shoot". Americans at thier best (looters). Only wish I could "lend" him some equipment /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif.

In 1979 I was stationed on a Destroyer that was near Biloxi Mississippi when Hurrican Frederick hit (cat 3). We rode the hurricane out at sea and came into Biloxi where it was total devastation. Our ship provided power and water to the city until infrastructure could be brought back online. We also formed work crews to do rescue, salvage and cleanup operations.

Yesterday, I was suprised that no Navy ships were called in yet, so I wrote a few letters to the news organizations asking why. The Navy has amphibous ships that can carry thousands or Marines (many beds), has food, water and all "hotel" services needed to provide aid and comfort to many of the residents of N.O. We (the Navy) had done it before....why not now? With the impending doom of typhoid and cholera, they are going to need hospitals. These amphibs have operating rooms and full hospital facilities to help out. Well....was I excited to hear on the news today that the good ol' Navy sent 4 Amphibs and a salvage boat!

GO NAVY!

Help is on the way for sure. Just watch the news and see what is going on. What surprises me is that they have not started to dipense of the looters that are robbing the local shops. I don't mean people taking food and water either. I mean the people robbing jewelry stores and such. They should be dispensed of and left for the buzzards to feast on. Talk about low life scum. My wife said this to me this morning. "Where are all the other countries that we help out when they have disasters? " I didn't have an answer for her. I really thought she was joking. She wasn't, she was dead serious. I just wish those folks down south the best of luck with the rebuilding. It will be a long time before the Cities are rebuilt. Building material and oil product prices will be at a premium for years to come now. I'm afraid the oil companies will use this catastrophy to its own advantage regardless of wether it does affect them or not.

Your right Sigarms, most people in this country dont realize how good we have it here, through the good and even bad times. In most 3rd world countries, there would be little or no assistance sent if it wasnt for the U.S.,U.K.,and a couple of others.

I also agree Jim, those people stealing unnecissary items like electronics and so forth should be shot. Unfortunatly, you would be thrown under the prison for killing "my baby, he wouldnt steal"...... Its a shame what things have come to. We see it all the time though, the folks in Miami started painting "INSURED BY SMITH AND WESSON" on their homes after Andrew.

In a civilized country, we just can't "dispense of and leave for the buzzards" human lives for taking material things. They can't arrest them, they have no place to take them.
I think it's despicable that this is happening.

I think it's pitiful that most residents in the other 48 states are more concerned with $3.00 per gallon gasoline than the fact that one of the largest cities in the country has been virtually wiped out, people are living in filth without food and water and have no where to go.

When it all comes down to it, do the gas prices REALLY matter?

Serious. Yep. The word I heard is that they need cash. That's easy: My Salvation Army donation with direction to hurricane Katrina relief for $500.00 USD is ID#1255336870003232300891.
Cheers!

Andy, why would you say that? I so whole heartedly disagree with you. It just has not been my experience at all. While many may talk about the price of gas or diesel, I just don't see it being the first topic of discussion. No doubt it is about the sorrow we have have those in the Gulf states.

I'll tell you why he said that. Today was my daughter's birthday, and friends and relatives from around the country called her with their good wishes. After they said "Happy Birthday", the number one question from every single one of them was, "How much are you paying for gas?" Not, "Can we give a donation to the hurricane relief rather than sending you something for your birthday?" Not, "Aren't you glad you and I can still buy gasoline, unlike those poor folks who lost everything?"

I can tell you, after the 7th call with the same question, I almost blew a gasket. It's a good thing it wasn't my birthday with the calls coming to me.
