Wow! That is an interesting saga. Sounds like you need a couple tranquilizers after going through all that. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use Pop-up Stopper. I only use it when I go to sites that I know have pop-ups, otherwise I don't use it. For a firewall, I use Zone Alarm. It works well for my needs. I, too, forgot to backup my e-mail addresses. I didn't have them written down or anything. Only thing I can hope for that they e-mail me again so I can re-add them to my address book. I sure wish I would stope receiving all that spam, though. I'm not sure, though, why SpyBot would have messed up that webpage. SpyBot doesn't run in the background or anything... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I hope your computer runs better now! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Sound LiKe Windows to me!!!! They Should have called it MS-PAIN instead.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I use Zone Alarm,AVG,AdAware, SpybotSD (search and Destroy) all of them in there free versions. And they do a fine job for my needs.

I recently fond out about AVG and so far have good luck using it.

I did look for these for a friend receintly and noticed a few spin offs on the Spybot program. THey may be la-git or who knows, so I went to I think Download.com to make sure I had the right one.

But there is absolutly nothing wrong with buying Nortons and using it. It's a very full featured program that is tweaked properly works very well. And often takes much less effort those who have niether the time or desire to deal with FREEBEE's

I just don't mind the limits of the free stuff... They obviously would prefer you purchase the full version. But I'm Cheap.....

I have had my own batlle going for over a month now with XP pro.

I P===O'd it, by killing power hard by the switch on the back...(while having problems installing a game....

Then on reboot XP came up- Played the anoying startup sound. Which I had turned off.

And promply told me it could not locate the sound drivers????? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
All the default sounds work, but if I try to load a game no sound plays in the game... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

My fault for the hard power kill.... Win SXXXX hates that.
So I tried to reinstall the xp as an upgrage to keep my files, this usually works OK.
Not this time. kept hanging up during setup at the drive checks... Kept locking up at the floppy which I have disabled in BOIS /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

So I tried to do a full install and same results /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Then after 3weeks or so of manual booting (holding F8) and choosing Normal Windows Boot. It waits till FRiday a week ago (as we were getting ready to go to the beach on SAT.) to actually dicide to go into setup making it past the floppy and no I was not ready....

So now it sits AS I wait to get to it this weekend......

The JOY THE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, the only good part about it is that I learned an awful lot that I didn't know before. Now if I could only remember what it was that I learned. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Bird,

I use the Google Toolbar, which has a pop-up blocker integrated into it. It works great - you can toggle it on and off and it is site specific.

I'm a big Google fan, and look forward to their on-line IPO later this summer.

Bill, I use Google frequently, but have not seen a reason to use their toolbar (maybe 'cause I don't know what advantage it would be).

All of this reminds me of the old joke I heard way back in 1982 when I first started on PCs:

Q: What's the difference between a computer salesman and a used car salesman?

A: The used car salesman knows when he's lying to you.

I recently had Windows 98SE crash (Yep! Old guy = old software). It seems that Windows Explorer went south and stayed there. I uninstalled 98SE, going back to just 98 and my problems disappeared.

Some days I wish I could figure out how the access the internet with DOS 5.0. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
