Your vent tube sounds normal as can be there has to be some movement of air its got to have an oil smell and there isn't any PCV system to evacuate the normal blow by so in such a small tube its minimal what you describe dont worry about it.

If it uses some oil dont worry about that either that can come and go depending on oil type and usage not just engine condition.

The intake air pre-heater you have is called a Thermostart or TS for short around here will be maybe necessary once the temps get down to 50 deg F it is for mine anyway and maybe a lot lower for you they are all different from what I gather.

I know a guy here that never uses his and I have personally seen it start at 20 deg F w/o the TS so it varies it didn't like it but it did start.

fwtw I always use mine once it gets cold and I pull the comp release to get the engine spinning over after I use the TS for the 20 seconds. good luck

thanks the guy said he put a good synthetic oil in it but a bit thinner than old oil he said. o it can get cold here so when i use it in the cold weather i will use the ts and comp release when it gets cold . wont be using it for the next few weeks but will let you all know how i get on with it when i use it next thanks again

Oh my God thats the problem right there just like I said about the type of oil!

Please go back to petroleum based 15-40 RotellaT or whatever you have available synthetics are not for 30 year old loose tolerance diesels or any old engine.

Old oil thats a funny way to put it but it does describe it well enough! Yes 10-40 petroleum based diesel oil is what you could be using in a real cold climate the API classification is CD and up CF-4 is what a lot of current diesel oils are and they work fine with old engines.

Synthetic has a tendency to run through guides and seals and rings on engines not designed for it because it is so slick it just seeps by. I wont use it in anything I own fwtw.

You can change it whenever its not an emergency its in there now but it sure wont do that engine much good in the long term change it to petroleum based at your next oil change should be fine or anytime its up to you.

I dont know what it holds but I imagine its about 5-6 qts as a guess but someone else here with that machine may chime in and help you out further?

I read just now on Hoye's web site a post there says the 1500 holds 4 qts.

That is a great place for Yanmar info and parts fyi.

yes i hope to get a bit of use out of it before i need to do any engine strips. i checked the oil its about 5ml bellow the top mark it has just been changed before i got it along with filters and a clutch i think it has sat about for a bit so will give it a bit of use see how it goes my old mitsi compact needed heat to start do yanmars not need heat ? as it starts so easy ? thanks

When you say heat do you mean like from engine heater or block heater or like hair drier blown in the intake, or just the glow plugs. If you need heat in the summer months id say your close to worn out. The better your engine starts without aids of anykind the better shape its in. If its only 5ml low how in the world did you even measure that? There can be 10x that just stuck to the walls and in the oil journals as you check it.

Most of us use the compression release anytime we start up for the first time. You can hold it open and spin it till the oil pressure cuts the light out the close it and let it fire. This keeps the first compression stroke on a fully oiled and presurized system. Also keeps wear on the starter down.

The YM1500 holds 4 quarts of engine oil. I use Rotella 15w-40 in mine. I never have to add oil between changes.
