Tax Refunds being stolen

FYI Turbotax Deluxe no longer supports Schedule C or D. If you need those you will need to upgrade $$$ to Turbotax Premier. I've been a Turbotax user for years but this year switched to H&R Block due to Intuit's deceptive money grab. See the Deluxe reviews (1.5 stars) on Amazon.

Thanks. I noticed that when I ordered it said the versions had changed, so choose carefully. So, I ended up with the Premier version. With Amazon Prime @$99/yr I think Turbo Tax Premier was $55 or $65, can't remember which. They find a way to milk it. :)

We use Amazon a good bit. There's no BJ's, Costco or Sam's Club around here close enough to be useful.

IM on HR Block. It works well for my needs. I hate paying someone to do what I can do myself.

I switched to H&R Block (then known as TaxCut) when TurboTax implemented copy protection on their CDs. You might have to be kind of old to remember that fiasco. Anyway I never went back, partially because it's cheaper, but that's mainly out of stubbornness.

H&R block is missing some function that it should absolutely have. There's more than once when I'm doing my return that it tells me "stop here, go fill out x worksheet on paper, and put the result here." When all the info that x worksheet requires is already in the program. They just chose not to code it. And not really exotic stuff either... relating to self-employment income and AMT.

I just got an "apology" email today from intuit stating that if you filed those forms last year and were subsequently forced to upgrade this year they would give you a $25 refund. "Sorry for the misunderstanding"

When i got my Ttax a couple weeks ago, it was the same price at costco and amazon for the version I use. They are giving a $25 refund because of the stink people made over them taking out capability and making people buy more expensive version.

I bought the deluxe and the Premier has D and C - a change this year. However I received a $25 refund offer in e-mail when I buy the Premier. I guess they are offering all those that register with the Deluxe this offer.

I suppose that I am in the minority here, but I very gladly pay an accountant (and a LOT) to do my taxes - have for the last 25 years or so. I was on a "field assignment" at the time from my engineering services company and was blessed to have a guy recommended to me by others in the same situation. They reported that he was phenomenal at finding deductions for folks in our situation. It was true. Got me back about 3 times what I had calculated. He has since done the same thing in spades for our rural property. It was just astonishing to find all the things that could legally be deducted for rural acreage and farmland!

So ask around if there might be someone as good in your area. Although I usually pay my guy between $1k and $2.5k depending on what schedules are included, I am certain that I would spend MUCH more than that in unclaimed, legitimate deductions. Gives me a great sense of peace and satisfaction every year to know that the taxes were done right and that I paid as little as possible.

If you expect a refund, file at the earliest possible moment.
If you expect to pay, don't file until April 15th.
Tweak your W-4s to get the lowest possible refund, or the lowest possible tax owed as you can. No sense letting Uncle Sam use your money for free, or fine you for not paying enough during the year.
