I thought this was rather interesting. It is information about how well TBN is doing on the net according to traffic. I guess with all the billions of sites on the net, being in 20,150th place isn't all that bad! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here is some more info:

Traffic Rank for tractorbynet.com: 20,150 ((supposed to be a down arrow here) 7,288)

Speed: Average (58% of sites are faster), Avg Load Time: 1.9 Seconds (what's this?)

Other sites that link to this site: 100

Popups: Many (12% of sessions have popups)

Online Since: 18-Feb-1999

Site stats for TBN

I am sure our esteemed moderators can confirm this. Alexa numbers are somewhat misleading in that they come from Alexa toolbar stats only. This comes from their FAQ:

What is Traffic Rank?
The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis. The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users). The three-month change is determined by comparing the site's current rank with its rank from three months ago. For example, on July 1, the three-month change would show the difference between the rank based on traffic during the first quarter of the year and the rank based on traffic during the second quarter.

Here is more from Alexa. You be the judge of the accuracy of their numbers.

Some Important Disclaimers
The traffic data are based on the set of Alexa users, which may not be a representative sample of the global Internet population. Known biases include (but are likely not limited to) the following:

Our users are disproportionately likely to visit alexa.com, amazon.com and archive.org, and traffic to these sites may be substantially overcounted.

The Alexa Toolbar works only with the Internet Explorer browser. Sites frequented mainly by users of other browsers will be undercounted. For example, the AOL/Netscape browser is not supported, which means that Alexa collects little data from AOL users, and our traffic to aol.com is likely lower than it would be for a more representative sample.

The Alexa Toolbar works only on Windows operating systems. Although a large majority of the Internet population currently use Windows, traffic to any sites which are disproportionately visited by users of other operating systems will be undercounted.

The rate of adoption of Alexa software in different parts of the world may vary widely due to advertising locality, language, and other geographic and cultural factors. For example, to some extent the prominence of Korean sites among our top-ranked sites reflects known high rates of general Internet usage in South Korea, but there may also be a dispropotionate number of Korean Alexa users.

In some cases traffic data may also be adversely affected by our "site" definitions. With tens of millions of hosts on the Internet, our automated procedures for determining which hosts are serving the "same" content may be incorrect and/or out-of-date. Similarly, the determinations of domains and home pages may not always be accurate. When these determinations change (as they do periodically), there may be sudden artificial changes in the Alexa traffic rankings for some sites as a consequence.

The Alexa Toolbar turns itself off on secure pages (https:). Sites with more secure page views will be under-represented in the Alexa traffic data.

In addition to the biases above, the Alexa user base is only a sample of the Internet population, and sites with relatively low traffic will not be accurately ranked by Alexa due to the statistical limitations of the sample. Alexa's data come from a large sample of several million Alexa Toolbar users; however, this is not large enough to accurately determine the rankings of sites with fewer than roughly 1,000 total monthly visitors. Generally, Traffic Rankings of 100,000+ should be regarded as not reliable because the amount of data we receive is not statistically significant. Conversely, the more traffic a site receives (the closer it gets to the number 1 position), the more reliable its Traffic Ranking becomes.

Hmmm ... I never get any popups on this site.

To all Alexa Toolbar users:

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!!!

How do you think they get these stats?

Think about it.

You only get a popup if you're not signed in as a member.

Anyone who goes to the discussion page without being signed in gets a popup trying to get you to register as a member.

I assume it says "popups: Many" beacuse the majority of hits on the site are from unregistered users. For example, there are currently 61 registered users and 110 anonymous users currently online.

Thanks for that link! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I was just thinking about it but couldn't remember the name. I was just about to post if anyone knew anything about it! Weird. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I used to get a pop-up a few times until I found a folder called OpenSite with an executable file attached. Once I got rid of that folder and all its contenets, they stopped. It always gave me a pop-up for art.com. Only happened while I was on this site, even though it was not connected at all to TBN.

The Alexa toolbar is a spyware/trojan that monitors your internet traffic so they can send focused popup messages. It is recognized as spyware and is removed by both SpyBot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft Ad-Aware. I'd bet money you don't get popups since you probably wouldn't install programs such as Alexa.

Actually, I don't think Alexa delivers any popups---it has a built-in popup blocker.

You may be thinking of Gain which published the 'Gator' tool (not to be confused with our GatorBoy /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif) and delivers all sorts of popups and ads.

The two toolbars I use are the Google toolbar, and the Alexa toolbar. Pros and cons to both.

Knowing how it works, I personally think the spyware built into Alexa is harmless to me. I've been using it since it came out a couple years ago.

AHMEN TO THAT i never get any pop ups! so where is that coming from?

Unregistered users get a pop-up offering them a forum registration. That's it.

From time to time we do pop-ups for registered users as well, but only for special announcements.

I never used Alexa before but when I typed in my web site name I got a traffic rank of 1,730,867. Is that good, bad or indifferent according to Alexa? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It means that some very small number of Alexa toolbar users have visited your site.

The freebie Alexa toolbar tracks your internet usage and transmits this info back to Alexa for sales and marketing purposes. They act like Big Brother. They know where you have been and your visiting habits. This is spyware.

I would not place too much significance in the Alexa numbers since their database represents only a fraction of all internet users.

I have been told that most of the top 2000 sites as ranked by Alexa are **** sites. What does that say about Alexa users?

That is completely incorrect. They publish the top-500 on their website if you want to see for yourself.

tracks your internet usage and transmits this info back to Alexa for sales and marketing purposes.

I don't recall ever being offered anything for sale via Alexa in my two years using it. Sometimes reading a company's terms of service can paint their service in a negative light, when in reality some of the wording is there for their protection, not really to define exactly what they do.

I understand where you're coming from, but I think you're really misinformed about Alexa.

My information came from one of my clients who did a lot of internet advertising. They were approached by Alexa who used the web stats as a means to solicit advertising business. BTW, Alexa is part of Amazon.com but I am not privy to how Amazon uses the Alexa info.

Go to the Alexa site and look under Data Services and Company Info. Now read between the lines. They have collected tons of data on the usage habits of internet surfers. One can only guess what can be gleaned from this data. Oh, they also will sell this data to anyone who wants to pony up the cash.

I would be more concerned with the data gathering methods they are using. Most Alexa toolbar users have no idea that their internet activity is being tracked.

I would suspect that a lot of folks from Bill Gates right on down the food chain gather user information these days. It's all a part of the big marketing scheme of things. Don't know if it's good or bad but I'm certainly not going to let it spoil my day, and I'm not looking over my shoulder for big brother either.

As for the ****, I don't visit the sites that show it and I don't condone them. However it is a very interesting point to know that if folks didn't ask for this trash then it wouldn't be offered. Supply and demand quite simple. It's just another choice that we all must make for ourselves.

I have built and run 3 different sites, and I get all those stats through my control panel that I use for the sites. I can tell who's been there, what browser they used, how they got there, what countries are represented and much much more. It's so common, I don't even think about it anymore. I have never assumed that my computer use is private. I'm sure it isn't very. John
