TBN's recent survey

That's too funny! It gave the wrong town, the correct ISP, but the wrong company. If gave NOTHING that could identify where on my ISP's network I am located.

As I said before, the most they can trace to most people is their ISP and that is it! They cannot identify your name, your home address, or the color of the pajamas you are wearing while surfing the web, either.

Called ID is more dangerous than a web survey.:confused2:

weird, they had my provider and IP right, but it said I was sitting in my undies when actually I was nekid

Moss, everything you say is true only if one assumes basic legal resources in the public domain are used to track an IP.
Now if one could cross refence that IP to other websites and start to process the info, your world starts to unfold. Think google as the "big brother" bad guy.
Using only basic legal means I located your residence in under three minutes.

Tig,
Nice little place, isn't it? :)

You did not determine my residence from the IP address of my home computer that I use to access TBN because that IP address is hidden behind my internet access device and translated to an IP address owned by my ISP, as are most home computer IP addresses. All that can be determined from that IP address is the name of my ISP and the city it is located in. That's a fact.

You could easily determine my location through searches of other IP addresses associated with me on the internet. Do you see the difference? :)

It is very nice. I should have mentioned that before but I didn't want to intrude. I already feel like internet weird guy.
It is very clear to me how I would have found you starting from the resources available to survey monkey. You are right in saying the IP doesn't easily trace back to your home. Mine misses by hundreds of miles. On the other hand, I have done several "proof of concept" security investigations and I have found that the tools available are very impressive, PC/net security, not so much. If you are connected you can be found.
Again my point is one should never assume anonymity on the net. It is a public place.

Well said.

Did you see my 24' radio telescope in my back yard? I can gather all kinds of good stuff with that thing.

I wouldn't know a radio telescope if it landed on me. :)
Your previous pajama comment got me thinking about proof of concept on something I have been aware of for a while. A quick search revealed this info.

Maybe once I get my house built I'll set up a machine with a web cam and see how easy this is to do.

I filled out the survey, but I wasn"t worried, I couldn"t find any tin foil to go over my head so I just used an empty Bud Light beer case to go over it. Problem solved. LOL zman :laughing::laughing:

I never give out salary ranges or any information other than answers to general or generic questions...This is the cyber age..don't kid yourself, when you send anything from your computer there is an IP address attached and you can be identified from that IP ( Internet Protocol ) address..

Yup, when it wouldn't go on at that point I quit and deleted PM survey. No justifiable reason for TBN to need that info. Sorry. I absolutely never complete a 'survey' that asks for information I deem is not needed for that survey.

As a moderator, you should be able to see my IP address. Go ahead and tell me where I am while making this post. (Just to prove that if I want to hide, I can make it difficult, not impossible, but rather difficult to find me. So, where am I now?

I already said in many posts that it cannot be determined where most people are by their IP addresses. What exactly do you want?

Some folks just want to complain ...

Its simple. Against surveys? Don't take one!

O.K. I have experimented with anonymous proxy servers in the past. I have never used them for good, only evil.

Seriously, though, I think all of us are more likely to be harmed by someone in our own communities than we are harmed by someone in the internet community.
