Tc 40 D keeps slipping out of 4wd!!!

Here is what I'd do. Disconnect the 4wd engagement linkage (from the lever). Then I'd move the lever directly on the differential back and forth engaging and disengaging the 4wd. See if you can feel the detent engagement. The detent should make the shifting fork "stick" in 4wd. If you can't feel that detent then maybe that's your problem (and the gearbox does need to come off). BTW notice that you will have to drain the hydro fluid if you pull off this gearbox.

I've just been looking in the repair manual section 23-4. This might not be that bad.

Peter, you've just posted the illustrations I was going to send Rick by email. Thanks! I no longer need to do that. I was not going to post them here because sometimes posting details like this causes a thread to go in many directions. Perhaps that won't be the case and Rick can find out his problem with a minimum of hassle. I'm glad to see you agree with me about this being a relatively easy removal if some simple tools are available. I figure that dropping the driveline is one of the hardest things because of having to drive out the rollpins. Even though the instructions say that the whole driveline should be removed, it seems to me that you might get lucky and only have to remove the rear sliding collar to be able to drop the gearbox.

Hey Jim,

Good to talk with you again. I hope I didn't steal your thunder putting up these manual pages; you were very helpful with by B plate repair and I got a little ahead of myself this time. On a side note did you notice that this little gearbox also has a hydro drain bolt (part #1)? Might drain that one too, next time I change fluids. I'll be curious to see of Rick can "feel" the detent in the 4wd lever with the linkage disconnected. I think that detent (spring and ball) are the only things holding it into 4wd. My guess is that they engage part 11 (shift rail). I hope his gears aren't beveled. With any luck he'll have a no $ repair like my joystick valve fix.

Peter and Jim,

Thank you for the illustrations.....I believe that they will be really helpful!!! So far I have been really busy with work and family things the past several days, I hope to be able to check things out in the next couple of days....

Peter I will try the proceedure you suggested prior to trying the disassembly of the gear box...... I too hope that maybe it will be something simple and not the gears themselves!!!! But I guess I will find that out soon!!!!

I appreciate your help on this project as in the past!!!! I'll let you know how I make out!!

No problem at all, Peter. Having both of us advise and aid Rick with the same suggestions only adds credibility to our information. I had not scanned the images yet, so you saved me some work. I'm glad to have you as a co-advisor.

On a TC40D there are 2 levers that control the 4wd. One is on the console next to the PTO lever and it "locks in" the front wheels. The other lever is behind the seat and it actually disengages the front wheels completely from the drivetrain. It sounds like you are operating the lever behind the seat. I have owned my TC40D for 6 years and only used the lever behind the seat 3 or 4 times. The only time I need it is for extended road driving. Maybe you are shifting the lever behind the seat more the necessary and this is part of your problem.

Andy,

Could you provide some pictures or diagrams???? I bought mine used and it didn't come with a manual. Also some of the markings have worn off, so most of what I know is from reading on here and other boards!! I'm not familiar with another 4wd lever, so that may have contributed to or be a part of my problem.... anyone else know anything about this please feel free to chime in!!!!

Thanks

Rick

Andy,

To have that second lever I think Rick would need to have sensitrack (part of the supersteer option). Rick do you have supersteer?

I may have made a wrong assumption. I thought that the "D" in TC40D means that the tractor is equipped with Sensitrack. My tractor does have Supersteer and Sensitrack. I assumed that all "D" tractors have the Sensitrack clutch. Am I wrong?

Yeah Andy, SuperSteer and Sensitrack are only on "D" model tractors with the additional SS option. There are actually more "D" model tractors without SS than with it. All those have the 16LA loader instead of the 17LA like yours. When I bought my tractor, SS was an additional $1500 option over the regular "D" model. On the non-SS tractors, there is only one lever for 4wd and the tractor is either in 4wd or 2wd depending on the single lever.
