Anyone know what this is?

My tractor has developed a hydro leak and I'm not sure if it's actually a leak. I just did my 50 hour service and there were no problems. I decided to change the hydro/trans fluid rather than take a bath trying to change the filter only. The pictures are of a bolt or a plug where the fluid seems to be coming from, but it isn't anything that was touched during the service. I'm wondering if anyone knows what it is? Is it a plug or is it an overflow valve of some sort?

These pictures were taken from below the left floor board and this bolt/plug is directly behind the rear wheel. The arms/rods in the pictures are the HST and rear/mid PTO controls and as you can see in some of the pictures, it is just above the mid PTO.

It isn't leaking badly and it only seems to leak after I've been running it for a while. It has only leaked enough to leave a spot the size of a piece of paper and all fluid levels have been checked and are okay.

The only reason I question whether it's a plug or an overflow of some sort is that I can't tighten it. I've tried and it just goes so far and spins. This may be by design or there may be something wrong. It will come out, but I haven't taken it all the way out because I didn't feel like making a mess this evening.

Any help/suggestions is appreciated.

So, did you remove it or not? Did you strip the threads? Are you 100% sure it is leaking from this plug?

Haven't removed it and probably won't until this weekend. I don't know what's behind it and I want to be ready for a mess.

Anybody got an exploded parts diagram to see what may be hiding under there?

Here it is. Still have no more idea what it is than I did last week. As you can see from the picture, the bolt thing is fine, but the threads in the hole in the transmission are not good. Those little slivers on the bottom left of one of the pictures are those threads. The black thing seems to be a rubber coated steel gasket.

I don't have a clue what could've caused that. Especially given where it is and that nothing else around it is damaged. As I said earlier, I had never noticed that bolt until it started leaking. After I noticed the leak, before I put a wrench on it, I was able to turn it with my fingers.

Anybody have any idea what this is and how I can fix it?

Might help if I actually attach the pictures.

No idea of what that is for, I guess ordering a new set-up from the dealer will be the best solution/fix?

Did it look like someone else had ever put a wrench on that bolt and possibly over tighten before you tried to snug it up? I just did my 300 hr service, like you said that isn't anything that gets touched as part of the routine maintenance. Just wondering if the dealer or factory had stripped it. Its out of the way, so nothing could have hit it. Looks like the case will have to be re-threaded or helicoiled. Keep us posted.

I can't say for sure, but as you can see from the picture, most of the paint is missing from the bolt head. Other than that, it doesn't look like anything has happended either way. Not saying anyone is responsible, but there's no way I could prove anyone (including me) did anything to cause this.

I can't imagine what could've caused this other than it either being cross threaded or over tightened. It just drives me crazy knowing that I didn't have anything to do with it and it was probably caused by someone doing something stupid yet I'll be the one that has to pay an arm and a leg to get it fixed.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is "helicoiled"?

Thanks

A heli coil is a threaded insert. Essentially you prep the hole as if you were going to be tapping new threads.. but instead use a helicoil insert tool. ( threaded on both OD and ID.. that it.. it scres in an oversized hole.. or one with damaged threads, and thus provides new clan threads in the ID of the bolt.. etc. You loose 'torque' capacity on that fastener in most cases.. however it doesn't look like this was comething that needed to be muscled down anyway.

Any idea what it is.. a drain or overflow? Got any schematics or a parts reference book to help out. it would be great to know what was behind there before you go about repairing it... Might even be something for an expanding soft plug, and a little rtv.. depending on what it is used for. That would be my next step... find out what it is.. then decide repair options from there. If it was in warrranty.. i obviously wouldn't even touch it.. if not.. i'd ask the dealer how they would repair it. and for how much... If it wasn't astronomical.. i might even let them do it...

Depending on the thickness of the metal in that area.. you have a couple options.. helicoil to oem size.. or tap for next size up.

Getting it to seal would be my prime concern, whatever you choose to do.
