Why would having gas in the fuel cause it to run for a half hour and quit which was the original complaint?

Given a mix of gas and diesel in the tank, it will run fine until the engine gets up to operating temp, then run rough/stall, etc. I got soundly defeated on a road call once by not running a tractor with mixed fuel in the tank long enough to produce symptoms that the owner complained of. When I went back the next day (for free!) I figured it out.

Funny part was, the guy tried to blame his son-in-law until he called him and verified the SIL hadn't added fuel. "I should have known" the customer said " The SOB borrows the tractor all the time, but has never once put fuel in it."

I'll have to file that one away.I would have thought it would have taken less than a half hour to get to operating temperature though unless it was just sitting around idling.

Now that is truly funny. I've got something to laugh about for a week now. At 110 deg. I needed that.
