That sure surprises me, Neil. You'd think you could part it out on ebay and get that much for just the engine. I don't know, really, since I've never done that. It just seems like a possibility.

Jim,

Insurance companies are lazy. They just want to clear up the paperwork and get the file closed. When my son totalled out our 4 wheeler, they just shipped it off to a junk guy. I saw the wheeler out on the road about 6 months later and asked the guy where he got it. In a nutshell the insurance company sold a 4,000 dollar wheeler for $200.00. If I would have known I would have bought myself.

An 18 wheeler rolled over and dumped its load on me and the tractor while mowing by the road.

Wow! Gives a whole new meaning to Roll Over Protection Structure! Glad to hear you're still here, that was close. Bet you're glad you were on a CUT rather than an open riding mower.

Hope everything works out with the insurance. When all is said and done, the details of the story would be interesting to hear.

Good luck and thank your lucky stars.

Getting back to the original topic, I presume the trucker's insurance will be paying for things. They will most likely figure the tractor as a total loss, but then they try to sell the wreck for scrap value. The poster is wondering if he might be ahead of the game to buy his wrecked tractor from them.

I had an opportunity to do something similar once with an RX-7 and regretted it later when I had another one. Also several years later with a Saab that I did buy back but wished I hadn't.

I guess it depends on if you'll get another 33 or similar size tractor that parts can be used on, whether you think the replacement will break in a major way, or if you have a market for the used parts. I'd guess the engine is okay, probably the hydraulic pump and cylinders, but I'd wonder about the tranny, depending on where the thing broke. The tires and wheels are probably okay, the loader, the ROPS, etc. It's a tough call. A lot depends on how handy your are and what the insurance company thinks its worth.

I agree. The thing should be worth a fortune in parts alone.

Yea, we probably could have. I never really thought about it actually. It really did need alot of work, I don't think there was one part of the machine that was truly 100%. Everything was cracked or chipped in someway. The repair estimate was about $15,000

I have refrained from posting "hearsay"- especially negative stuff about a brand that I don't own. But in light of this post, I will pass along what I was told by a trusted friend who owns several NH tractors.

Again, take this for what it is... a second-hand story.

The guy who cuts & bales our land owns an '04 TC40D. He came a few days ago to pick up the bales. Last year he used the NH but this year he brought his old MF ag tractor. Knowing how much he loves his TC40, I asked why he didn't bring it to load the hay.

He said that he was at the NH dealer picking up some baler parts and they told him to NOT use the TC40 to load bales. According to him, they had 6 TCs in their shop that had split in half after the loader bracket (sub-frame?) broke and all the stress was transferred to the engine/tranny coupling.

The supposed fix is to strengthen the current bracket and add a second attachment point to the frame. He said he would not be using the loader to move bales until he could get this enhancement done--- after hay season.

Obviously not what happened here, but still might be worth noting.

Spoke with my dealer today about this and he stated it's true to a point. If you intend on picking up round bail on a Class III without a NH loader it will crack a case somewhere. He stated there are Class III's being broken half picking up rounds bails using a none NH loader. If you have a NH loader then you already have the brace kit to pick up round bails. He also stated if you break any of the cases picking up round bails without a NH loader then no warranty.

When i was looking for my TC33 i was talking about backhoes for them.

had a dealer tell me that he would never put a backhoe on a 3 point with out a subframe because they "i've seen them snap a tractor in 2" i said ... OH...ok...

but ya sounds like you got lucky and should be getting a new tractor out of the deal.

As posted above, this will void New Hollands warranty. My dealer met we halfway between the lowest price he had on the lot and the N.H. FEL & B.H.

I thought that was enough incentive.
