According to my Repair Manual, everything is the same after the transmission. You have the same PTO brake/clutch arrangement as the hydro models. I just can't see this as a problem in the long run unless there was an engineering snafu. If so, I think more of us would be having problems. I do think it would be wise to pull the throttle back to idle before disengaging the PTO. That way the brake would only have to stop the rotation from low r.p.m.. Personally, I make it a practice to engage and disengage the PTO from idle. I guess the "jury is still out" on this one until we get a little more long-term use on our tractors. Mine has 305 hr with no problems in the PTO drivetrain./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I agree and so does my dealer, the Class III's (with hydro tranny) have PTO brakes.

I talked to my dealer after seing this thread and he told me this was not a usual occurance. Since reading about your problems whenever I disengage my PTO I move the throttle lever slowly to low idle and gently disengage the PTO lever. I still get a little free spin but it is going a lot slower if I bring it down with the engine.

My TC40D with 42 hours on it was flatbedded back to the dealer yesterday. My 2 to 4 wheel drive lever stopped working at about 10 hours and finally at 42 the PTO and drive were gone. I've been runnning a land pride medium duty rotary cutter and a bear cat chipper. I wish the owners manual was more specific regarding the PTO. I'll let you know the dealers diagnosis.

My dealer called this morning. He said that NH had installed a substandard slip ring in the hydro which broke due to metal fatigue. They are installing a new heavier one which NH tells him will solve the problem. He says I do not need a slip clutch, and no special procedures are needed in regard to PTO use. I know several of you have recieved different advice. Does what I am being told sound right?

There is a thrust plate in the hydrostatic transmission which is a separate part and can be "serviced" separately to the transmission. Most parts are listed as "not serviced separately" but this may be the part that was faulty. Could you still drive the tractor and only the 4WD and PTO would not function, or was the complete drivetrain failing? If you will ask your dealer for the part number of the failed part, I'll look it up in my parts catalog and post a scan of it so others will have it for a reference if something goes wrong in the future. You might also ask him if New Holland has a service bulletin on the weak part. ...hope you get your tractor back soon.

Sorry for the delay jinman. The dealer faxed me a diagram from NH, but I was unable to scan it in. The diagram shows what appears to be a service bulletin titled: TC40D 4CYL COMPACT TRACTOR - NORTH AMERICA (11/99) 03.04.02 CLUTCH, HST They are replacing part number 7 which is a locking ring and inspecting parts 6 & 8 for damage. (I can't describe 6 and 8) Hope that gives you enough to work with.

Bob, check the attachment for the parts catalog view of the HST clutch. I believe this is the part you referred to. It's the locking ring (part number 7) that broke. This must have allowed the collar to slip out of postion and not transfer torque from the engine to the transmission.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure all Class III, D-model owners will be interested in watching for this failure on their tractors.
