Hi all, I have 2001 TC40D. I was moving dirt this weekend had it 4wd went to pickup dirt with the loader, as I was going forward to pickup the dirt I felt a pop in the front end. Now about 5ft the front tires lock up and not a good sound coming from the front chunk. I can back up a little and move forward again for another 5ft tire lockup again. It sounds like something has broke off in the front diff. The 4wd lever is moving more easier now since this has happened.
Does any body have any idea?
I suspecting this is going to cost me$$$.
Any help would deeply appreciated, Thanks

I would take it out of 4wd, shut the engine off, jack up the front, and turn a wheel on either side to see if I could identify where the noise is coming from. I would try to get a trailer close to where the tractor is located to load the tractor because you could end up doing lots more damage if you try to drive it. When things start locking up, it's normally an indication of serious damage just as you suspect. It's time to tear it down and investigate.

Thanks Jim, I did jack the front end up started spinning 1 tire the other side was spinning the other way never did lockup or any noise.
Had some else spin the other side the same way I was it made about 2 full turns made clunk sound and lockup had to spin them backwards to free them up then the same thing again when spinning them the same direction. The 4wd lever is out of 4wd, it seems to be no different when it's in 4wd or out now since this happened. I used to could tell when I put it 4wd. How hard is the front end a pain to take apart? Just wondering if I want to do it or take it to the dealer.

Thanks

Years ago I blew the front differential on my 2120 (just a little larger than yours). A dealer fixed it for $1600 and it lasted a week because he didn't shim it properly. It was done again and has lasted over 15 years with no problems. It is not hard to do. Just make sure you use a matched gears set and shim it exactly as the service manual states to get the correct backlash and preload.

Class III New Hollands have developed the nasty habit of shearing the bolts holding the ring gear to the front differential carrier. Not what you wanted to hear, but it's probably what you will find. Your first operational test didn't force the front ring/pinion to turn; the second test did and produced lockup. If you dig into it yourself, you should get the proper info from a NH repair manual one way or the other.

Is it a difficult task to replace the shear bolt.

We are not talking about a shear bolt. I'm thinking the attaching hardware for the front differential ring gear has failed.

The same thing happened to my TC40D a couple of years ago. The dealer got NH to repair it under warranty even though the warranty had expired. He found some of the ring gear bolts, or what was left of them, in the bottom of the axle housing. There was one that had backed half out and was the only thing holding the ring gear on. They stated that the lock washers were missing and the front end had obviously been misbuilt which is why NH covered the repair.

My TC35DA made that nasty pop sound once too. I think they have the same drive train? If not they're similar. My problem was the spider gears in the front differential chipped a tooth or two off and they would get stuck after a little rotation.

You have to watch your turns when your on a hard surface when your bucket is loaded. I try to make 99% of turns like that on dirt or grass now.

See attached diagram part #17 for the gears (this is for a TC35DA). I replaced the gears myself (dealer gave me the parts) in a couple of hours and it wasn't too hard to do.

When that happens does it usually shear off some of the teeth from the ring gear? What other damage typically ocurs?
