TC40DA vs. JD4610

Ok, folks, let's try not to start a brand war...

I am about to purchase either a TC40DA or a John Deere 4610. I already own a TC29D with Supersteer a FEL and approx. 550 hours on it. It's been a good machine, but to small to move round bales so I need to get a larger chassis machine with more loader capacity.

The New Holland folks seem to have offered the best deal so far, they will give me a TC40DA with 16LA loader with quick detach bale spear, and 72" bucket, loaded tires, for 12k and my tractor.

The JD folks will give me a 4610 with the same for 13,500.

What do you think, seems the 4610 is a little bit more tractor, but I really don't need it as the TC40 has the loader capacity I need.

Also, thinking maybe I should try and sell the TC29 outright, maybe I would get a better price?

Am I missing anything? Any advice is appreciated.

If you are getting the e-hydro and some of the other updates on the 4610 I believe you are getting more tractor than with the TC 40. Also the 4610 has more hp, more loader capacity, and more hydraulic flow. But if you don't need it then that's a mute point. I would try and get the deere dealer to do a little better deal. Who has better financing or are you paying cash?

For perspective I got a TC40DA with hydro, front tooth bar (carbide replaceable teeth), wheel weights and industrial tires for $22,350 in upstate NY. I think you'll get a little more selling your current machine outright, but is it worth the hassle? I used the NH 0% 36 month financing. Also, for what it's worth, I'm officially a "farm" since I have over ten acres and plan to plant some crops, so no sales tax. Deere was not willing to do this. Big selling point.

Interesting note about the Farm tax exemption. In CT you have to provide a document showing your tax status - this doesn't vary by dealer/brand.

I know the Deere line much better than the NH line - with that said and taking into account the other folks remarks, it sounds like both dealers are in the ballpark. If the 4610 is more $$ it sounds like everyone has stated it's also a slightly more powerful tractor. So I'd approach it as all things being equal which tractor do you like better? You must have had a decent experience from the NH dealer before to be going back there. If you like the tractor and the dealer is a straight shooter then NH may be the way to go. You didn't mention your experiences at the Deere shop - are they a good place to do business as well?

I think you've got it down to two very fine machines - it's really a matter of which Dealer/Tractor package appeals to you more. Either way you end up with one fine shiny new tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think both deals sound pretty good. I think I would at least try to sell my tractor outright. Then you could make a straight head-to-head comparison on the two tractors.

Frankly, I think the TC29D is a great little tractor and with supersteer and a loader you should be able to get $16-18k. A little patience and the willingness to try to sell your own tractor might mean a lot of extra cash in your pocket.

DW are you happy with your SuperSteer? Would you be getting it on the TC-40DA if you decide to go New Holland? Just curious......

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think I will try and sell my tractor outright for a week or two, and see if I can do a little better. I am going to put it on Ebay today hopefully...

With regard to the Supersteer, I think it is useful in some instances. Most notabley if I was doing allot of mowing on flat terrain, I would want SS. However, I have found in my typical type of work, the SS is not really needed. I am not planning to get it on the TC40.

Just a couple of quick comments, one on SuperSteer, I've had both SS and non SS versions of the NH TN series. If your trying to lift heavy loads the non SS model is much more stable with heavy loads so if I was going to lift round bales I would go straight axle. As far as selling outright vrs trade, at least in our states, Mass & Conn if you trade you only pay sales tax on the difference whereas if you sell outright you pay tax on the entire amount.
