They just got done fighting a war. I think the extremely slim chance of the ship sinking in peace time wasn’t a big concern.

Ive seen some pictures of former POWs on ships after they were freed at the end of the war...they looked like human skeletons lining the sides of the ship...they were given only whole milk for the first days and they were lining the gunnels of the ships because none of them could even hold down the milk...
