Price Check Temp gauge

Thank for the PM. I agree, bringing it up to spec is a better use of money.

Does anyone else want this gauge on the same terms? Please PM if interested.

I looked for some temp gauges today but I didn't know what size and thread the temp sensor was. Does anyone happen to know this info? I couldn't find a nut at the auto parts store that fit on the sensor nice, and I thought maybe it uses pipe thread but the sensor felt loose inside a pipe threaded fitting.

Could be, but it seems that a lot of guys have had to chase the threads with a metric tap to get it to work.

Norm I assume you are talking about the oil sender since that is what you quoted.

My one-liner post above replaced a longwinded explanation I drafted then decided that nobody wanted to read. Here is the detail supporting what I said:


My 1/8 NPT brass fittings appeared to have the same thread as Yanmar's oil sender. I found that 1/3 of them would screw into the Yanmar block and 2/3 were too large diameter. It appears that BSP specifies more taper, smaller OD at the tip, on the OD of the threaded part.

Trying several brass fittings, I observed that NONE of the fittings that would go in had visible damage after being screwed into the Yanmar block. And both sensors screwed in properly after this experimenting indicating my brass fittings hadn't botched the block.

Conclusion: Some NPT (American) fittings have enough taper to start the thread, some don't. Nothing was harmed by this experiment. NPT/BSP are randomly interchangeable depending if the NPT was turned down to a small enough diameter. Neither are likely interchangeable with Metric.

Actually, I would bet that Yanmar , Kubota, and other Japanese tractor makers use J I S, (Jananese Industrial Standard, aka BSPT), threads in all of their block fittings, (identical thread pattern and pitch as BSPT).
