Terra-Dome Earth Shelter Build

Hi NDvet,
It was uplifting to see you actually are using the Penetron product in your build and, Jay was involved, and the decent cost of the additive for your 4 module place. BIG double thumbs up on that one!
You guys will have all the bugs hashed out by the time I get around to my hopeful build.
I hope I make it through the upcomming 12/21/2012 event. Yeah, the missus has been a fan of the Gordon Michael Scallion (sp?) group and his predictions are really starting to come true. I figure many things could happen like a domino effect. That would certainly be a possible extinction event. Things are really starting to scare me. The house goes on the market this fall during "snowbird" season. That is what we call you yankees when you come down in the winter to Florida. lol (no offense meant) :)
The other thing that needs to be addressed is the foundation footers and those steel things that hold the concrete forms together for the pour and are left in for you to grind out and apply anti-corosive (phosforic acid) and then plug up. ICF builds use a plastic type of internal brace. I wonder if they could be used in this application. Someone would probably have to contact a manufacture of them and have them made to fit the concrete forms. That would take care of that problem. The question would be if they would be strong enough to prevent a "blowout".
Can you post a web site link for the Penetron? Thanks TTYL:D

Here is the contact info: I talked to Mr. Chen on the phone myself before talking Jay into using the product.

What problem are you refering to on the footings?

TD is using plastic legs to hold the rebar up on the dome so should not be the rust spot problem on the ceiling anyway.

NDvet,
I like this system best for footers, it drains away excess water, and also radon gases. Put it in and pour it. Seems like a good idea, no need to put in the extra corragated 6inch drain pipe around the foundation.

BuildBlock Insulating Concrete Forms

In regard to the vertical wall retaining forms, they use steel braces which hold the back to the front and provide the void for the concrete and rebar to go in. Then they leave them in the concrete and you have to cut off the ends and prep and patch inside and outside. Am I right? Well, if they were plastic you would not have to worry about that. Just snip plug and chug. :) Good to hear about the plastic in the dome part. Is the dome poured with the top open and the bottom sealed up with their forms? I think I missed that somewhere. lol (or forgot) :confused2:
Thanks for posting the contact info on the Penetron.
Have a great day!

We had rust spots in a few places in our ceilings (coming through the plaster overcoat). Painting with an oil based primer took care of them.

Oh crap that's funny; all the more humorous given the president's last name. Old Stanley Kubrick had one he!! of a sense of humor with Dr. Strangelove.

Yes they are steel braces. The guys go around and hit them with a blow of the hammer which breaks the exposed part off flush with the concrete. Cameron says I should paint them with Kilz stainblocker either before or after plastering and that should prevent any problems. They pour the concrete on the form on the dome up to the rebars and vibrate it down evenly then pour the other half on top of that and use a bull float, boards and trowels to smooth it.

I would think Jay would have them use these forms if you paid the additional costs. It would make it easier on them too.

Comet not a threat. I tend to believe NASA before I believe a 3,500 year old scientist. Furthermore my thoughts are if it does come I want to be right under the center of it along with the nuke from any Country that send it over here.

If anything hits this planet or causes that kind of destruction I would rather be incinerated than live in a hole killing my neighbors who are trying to steal my food.

No thanks.

From NASA:

"So you've got a modest-sized icy dirtball that is getting no closer than 35 million kilometers," said Yeomans. "It will have an immeasurably miniscule influence on our planet. By comparison, my subcompact automobile exerts a greater influence on the ocean's tides than comet Elenin ever will."

Yeomans did have one final thought on comet Elenin.

"This comet may not put on a great show. Just as certainly, it will not cause any disruptions here on Earth. But there is a cause to marvel," said Yeomans. "This intrepid little traveler will offer astronomers a chance to study a relatively young comet that came here from well beyond our solar system's planetary region. After a short while, it will be headed back out again, and we will not see or hear from Elenin for thousands of years. That's pretty cool."

I agree with you completely. This Pole Shift baloney sounds like something fans of Nostradamus would snort if it was cocaine.
