There is no best pickup. There may be a pickup most closely filling someone's narrowly defined set of requirements. Different folks, different requirements, different best fit. The real question isn't what can we think of that the Tesla pickup doesn't do well, but instead, what does it do well enough to make it a good solution to satisfying a set of requirements. What requirements does it satisfy well and what percent of potential buyers/users would have their requirements sufficiently satisfied?

Musk is clearly no fool. He didn't get his pile of gold by accident. To arbitrarily put down something he is thinking of spending many millions on without a little more thought than evidenced so far is not useful.

The question he answered is, are there sufficient buyers out there who will have their requirements met to make this truck a profitable venture.

He also makes rockets and carts stuff to the international space station. I don't need anything carted to the ISS but that doesn't make his rocket a bad thing, it just doesn't meet my requirements (especially budget.)

If I had the $ to use and not cut back on things I actually need I would be driving a Tesla.

What about the all electric replacement for 18 wheeler type cargo hauling? Lots of smart folks have signed up in advance to get some. Walmart is on board with advance deposits. Walmart is not known for wasting much money. What do they know that some of us may be missing?

Maybe some of us would be more inclined to want an electric pickup if the onboard sound system filled the cab with real testosterone/adrenaline pumping synthesized turbo diesel with open exhaust noises. Surely convenience store/gas stations would stock replacements for the little pine scented air fresheners with the new diesel exhaust and burning rubber scent.

In city deliveries where you spend a lot of time idling at stoplights and don’t need much range, they may work.

A lot of taxis in Boston are hybrids like Camrys. They average double or more mpg than gas models, and are holding up well.

Try running your Dryer all night and look at the electric bill! Then run it every night so you can drive tomorrow.
Of course the Government will give away electric to subsidize. Oh wait, that guy is gone.
