It's going to be a fight until the charging station/voltage system is standardized, narrowed down to one or two types, like gas and diesel is now... with charging stations as common as our current (no pun intended) fuel stations. Charge times need to be comparatively fast as filling a fuel tank, no body is going to want to regularly want to stop for 30 minutes or more to charge up... which is the reason my dad wants hybrid, and hybrids (in my opinion) will likely be the stepping stone to full EV.

I'm probably being overly pedantic but the Model S didn't start rolling out until '12 so closer to 5 years but I hear your point.

There's a couple things that I think still work in Tesla's favor. First they're the only one with 120kw+ charging infrastructure across the US, Europe and many other parts of the world. I can drive anywhere in the US and know that I'll make it there since they're ~100mi apart along the major interstates. Secondly Tesla is actually a car company second and a battery company first. The other auto makers can ramp up production but they're still going to be constrained by battery supply.

It's definitely going to be an uphill road for them but I think some of the things they're bringing some interesting things to the table(like no dealerships, for one).

I have read all 7 pages and my question for you is do you get paid by the post or are you on salary with Tesla?
You have a limited number of posts and a lot more information than an average consumer.

Nah, just a huge nerd and happy Model S owner.

I mostly lurk on the tractor stuff since I don't have a whole lot to contribute there(usually there's someone who knows more than me). If you want to know more about electronics or ham radio I'll happily bore you to tears however ;).

How long before road side assistance vehicles (tow trucks etc...) are equipped with mobile charging station generators? or will it become a cottage service industry?

I see possible major problems with battery (only) powered vehicles in storm/disaster etc. evacuation situations...

Yes there sure would be.

Oh come on now you're going to have to try harder then that ;).

A bit more seriously though I don't think I ever claimed it's the end-all-be-all solution to everything. There's certainly cases where it doesn't work as well, however I think there's certainly other cases where I think an EV powertrain could be an interesting potential.
