Maybe the Sterling Bullet got closer to the uniqueness of a Pete, KW or Freightliner; but it still was a re-badged Dodge.

Wouldn't it be nice to get a heave duty pickup from Ford with a choice of Cummins or PowerStroke engines, Allison, Aisin, or Ford trannies, etc, etc.

Yeah, that would be nice. The Dodge has, in my mind, the best styling. But has nagging little problems. Finally, they got their tranny sorted out with the new six speed auto. And, of course the Cummins is so much better than the others in my way of thinking.

I don't want to start a brand bashing war here, but did you know that the 6.0 Power Stroke was the biggest warrantee disaster in Ford's history? It led to a lawsuit with Navistar that was temporarily settled by a Judge ordering Navistar to keep producing the engines. I have personally talked to so many guys that are very upset with Ford about the tranny and the engine. The very idea that you have to pull the cab off to do work on the engine just blows my mind! They need a tilt cab at least. There is just not enough room for a large V8 in there. They are great for those that have a blind loyalty to Ford and are willing to do the testing on an unproven design. Been there, done that.

Dodge has had the luxury of running the same basic engine since the '80s and has been able to design the cab around it for two body style changes. I'm clearly biased, but I have never had a vehicle that will do what my Dodge does or one that has run as far with as little trouble. Or, for that matter, one that is as fast. The Dodge 48RE tranny is not up to the task, so now I'm trying to find a way to install an Aisin tranny in it to finally have the absolute best of all worlds. If that doesn't work out I may go to a six speed G56 manual. Either way, the truck is a keeper and it only has 200,000 miles on it. The Cummins is still nice and fresh.

To which I bet your running the VP44 injector pump.

Keep an eye on that 'lift pump pressure', aint no BS here, gauge it or put a low pressure monitor on it.

Lift pump gave out after the dealers did. Dodge closed the two dealers closest to me. Did find a dealer and told me a new pump had to placed in tank since the original pump is not available anymore. Didn't like that idea so installed a FASS pump that does go to the VP44.

Brazil, Argentina, and some other South American countires. At least, as a of a couple years ago. Info on it was posted here. Ford F250's with Cummins. They were not held by the same supplier contracts in Latin America.

Not sure if this is still the case though.

I originally thought the same thing when I got my Dodge, after running F250's for a number of years, and a good old F100 years back. Not any more. My Dodge has been a great truck.

No because then you would still have a Ford truck. ;)

FASS DDRP ?, did the same about 6 months ago.

Got a Airdog 150 coming, should be here before weeks end.

I have an F-250 with a V-10 and I can't get over how far back the engine sits under the cowl. This applies to the V-8 and the diesel too. I think the primary reason for this is better weight distribution for better handling. Also, I've speculated to myself about whether or not Ford had a Triton V-12 gasser on the drawing boards as it would fit in the Super-Duty's engine bay with no problem. Of course gas prices and mileage probably killed any plans that Ford may have had for such an engine.

I've seen Super-Duty cabs in the air at the local dealership that performs my routine maintenance, and it is unnerving. I think all modern full-size pickups should have tilt hoods like Pete's, KW's, etc.

Good one. I'd like a Cummins with a Ford wrapped around it.

mjn,

I'm expecting to see the tilt cab, or tilt front end from the windshield forward, as the next big innovation in pickup design. Someone will debut it and the rest will have to follow. Except maybe Dodge with it's in-line Cummins and excellent service accessibility.

I'm glad you have the V-10 because Ford is still in the experimental/ emergency/gotta do something phase with it's diesel. They need some kind of quick release on the cabs, like snaps, or velcro, or zippers to aid in the off and on process that adds 10 to 12 hours time to a simple repair. :confused2: Sheesh.

As much as I hate to defend Ford Super Duty trucks, the only time I have seen the need to remove the cab from the chassis of a Super Duty diesel was to replace the head gaskets. Unfortunately for Ford, this was a VERY common problem with the 6.0l Powerstroke. I am sure regular maintenance and replacements of stuff like alternators and batteries do not require cab removal. It's just not as easily done as on the Cummins. ;)

You do know that Ford used the 6.0 PSD up until last year in their commercial vans, don't you? Clearly, they had some issues with leaking gaskets, turbos etc. early on. No doubt. However, the 6.0 liter PSD had the least warranty claims of any Ford vehicle produced in 2006. Basically, about the time they got everything worked out, they were already replacing it.

Also, much of the problems were due to completely unqualified "techs" working on them. Most of the warranty claims were for the "same" repair being done over and over; which was the wrong repair. My truck is a good example. It had an oil leak that seemed like it wouldn't go away. That is until I took it to a Ford dealership who had a mechanic who had attended classes from Ford and IH for working on the 6.0 PSD. I had some sort of skirt plate gasket leaking and none of the previous "techs" could figure it out or, quite possibly, didn't know how to replace it. Once fixed, over a year and a half ago, there have been zero problems with the engine or transmission and almost every time the truck moves it's towing close to 20k pounds.

I had a '96 Dodge with a 12v Cummins for 9 years prior to getting the '06 F350. I spent far, far more getting it to run really strong and it ate transmissions for breakfast trying to pull the same loads. It killed a Goerend transmission, Sun Coast tranny and 2 ATS trannies before I got rid of it. You want to talk about expensive! Still, with all the modifications, the best the truck would run in the 1/4 was just over 15 seconds and it weighed just over 7200 pounds.

With about a tenth of the modifications to the engine and with a completely stock transmission, I've towed the same with the '06 F350 all across the country. It also ran the 1/4 in 14.2 seconds when it weighed in at 8100 pounds! I really liked the Cummins and the really low RPM torque it had, but the 6.0 PSD in a much heavier truck is considerably faster and has cost me far, far less to keep going. I completely expect the 12v Cummins I had to still be running fine at 400, 500k miles. It will take several more transmissions to get it that far, but the engine will go that far. I know for a fact the Ford 6.0 PSD won't cost me any more money for at least another 120k miles. It's still under warranty until 200k miles. And, to be perfectly honest, I'm not the type to ever drive a pickup or car over 200,000 miles. So, in my case, the 6.0 PSD is more powerful, gets better fuel economy (remember, the 5.9 Cummins had some serious mods) and will last me as long as I need it.

Oh, BTW, since I know the tech who worked on the skirt plate gasket, I had him check out everything on the engine and install ARP head studs. Blowing a headgasket is highly unlikely for it. And, he must be a magician too because the cab was not removed from the truck at any point. Not knocking the Cummins by any means, but don't believe all you read on the internet about Ford 6.0 PSD problems. ;)
