Texas Fall/Winter thread!

Due to the recent rains my pastures are swamped. Last couple of days have not
done much to dry them out. Now......
Did I hear the N.E Tx news correctly @10pm? Predicting Low 20's Tues/Wed with
wind chills at -10* to -15*. Jeez, I need just a bit of clear, dry weather to get ready for spring.
Plus, my dog is filthy and smells like wet dog (cold, wet and muddy) so coming
inside is not popular w/ the wife. The dog has a bed in the garage and I plug in a oil heater
in really bad weather.
Got the fire wood undercover and ready.
Try to stay warm E. Tx.

About all I ever saw closed up barns being good for was pneumonia.

I agree in general, but I think that there is "closed" and there is "closed up tight" when it comes to horses.

There was a certain local horse owner and horse racer that built his horses the best stalls money could buy (at the time), solid brick, with only a door and a window on one side.

Moving the horses in to those stalls promptly gave the horses respiratory diseases, and the horses had to be moved out to the wood, airy barn and stables that they had been in. (Leland Stanford, Sr.) The wood barn and the brick stables are still there today. The brick stables eke out an existence as shelter for lawn mowers and implements.

There are several tall light and air "chimneys" inside that bring light to the horses, and serve as natural chimneys for ventilation and fly removal.

As the palm trees in front suggest, it only occasionally gets down to freezing.

@WM75Guy good luck with the storm and your horses.

All the best,

Peter

Respiratory problems have never been an issue. The stables are not airtight. Today we just closed and fastened the aisle end doors. There are vents on the eaves and a vented cupola. Three of the stall dutch doors to the outside are still open. The 2 windows have been changed to dutch doors since this picture was taken. Tomorrow night the dutch doors will get closed to help prevent water lines from freezing.

@WM75Guy nice barn! (And I did not believe for an instant that you'd be sealing horses in.)

I hope everything goes well in the cold snap.

All the best,

Peter

Back in fall, did lots of shredding. We’ve had a drought and lost lots of trees, so been cutting those up and using grapple to load into trailer for haul off. In the hardest of winter, the tractor has been ‘warm’ in garage and I’ve been getting fatter! HAHAHA. Pretty weather coming soon and then back to moving trees and grading roads. Come and Take It!

This dust that has been blowing all day is terrible! I saw it predicted on the news but didn't catch where it originated or why.

Didn't really notice it until I looked down the street and it looked almost fogging and the pickup that was very clean is now covered in a layer of dust.

Yep. Grass is greening up, fruit trees have flowers or leafed out already, trees have
budded out...I don't have them, but love seeing the blue bonnets especially on Tx Hwys.
or in fields. Fun to see kids and family's sitting in the middle and taking pics. But with all
the good...here come the Crane Flys, wasps, scorpions and our little copperheads! You
gotta love it all. And we haven't even gotten to discuss the weather in August.
