Bird,
I'm glad you enjoy the beauty of the clouds. Here are a few I took here this afternoon from the comfort of the Jinman tractor seat cover on the New Holland.
Ron

Yep, Ron, those are some very pretty pictures. Now of course right now I'd rather see really dark rain clouds.

Pretty pumped about the forecast here in Brazos County. Good chance of rain through Sunday and highs in the mid 90s for the rest of next week. Still waiting for the excation contractor to show up and turn the hole I made into a pond and guaranteed the day he shows up my hole will fill with water.

Get it in writing! it may help more of us:laughing:

Cross your fingers North Texas, maybe over the weekend some of us get some needed moisture.

It was cloudy and sorta cool this morning, so I took my backhoe and cleaned out the silt traps at the two main feed channels into my pond. My silt trap is a deep pit that water runs through before flowing into the pond. Heavy silt settles to the bottom of the pit kinda like gold when panning. I removed probably 30 yards of silt out of two traps today. Here's pictures of one.

Next week looks good, well cooler anyway.

See the new fire burning in Palo Pinto again? 7500 acres so far, 25 more homes (167 in the April fire) burned, 125 more threatened. Palo Pinto county is running 80 day's of over 100* temps, last rain they said was late June.

This place is a powder keg!!

Ponds are getting real low, at the beginning of summer they were brimming full. That's what temps of over 100 degrees for weeks on end will do. No pasture to speak of, I do have green grass that will grow out IF we ever get a significant rain. The critters look good but I've been feeding them since last fall. I've got more cows to sell if necessary but I don't plan on feeding any $100 a roll hay. I'll feed breeder cubes and cubed alfalfa and what hay I bale off my place. I also plan on seeding rye and winter wheat and hope for enough rain for some winter grazing. If the drought continues I guess I'll sell off all but a few to keep meat in the freezer until things improve.

Just as a tip, you can winter cows on bright wheat straw if you supplment grain and molasses. If you can get just what the combine leaves of the heads, it has a lot of leaf and chaff, and is really sweet if rain hasn't washed the sugars out of the leaf. You have to supplement protein and oils, but the rumen can make good use of the cellulose.

Monday it rained. Temp was 8 in the truck thermometer. I felt like dancing. Tuesday HOT and 103 at noon. Bad part was my A/C went out on my truck going to work in the morning. The ride home was MISERABLE. When I got a chance after it cooled off a bit, I found out that my A/C belt had broken. Fixed that real quick. Rain forcast for this holiday weekend has now disappeared. Looks hot and dry..... maybe mildly cooler.

Now I've heard of folks in the frozen north getting cabin fever during the Winter, but I've been fighting a case of it because of the heat. And if that wasn't bad enough, Monday my wife came down with a Summer cold and by Monday night, I had it, too. Hers got bad enough that she went to the doctor yesterday; sinus infection and chest congestion. So far mine is just sneezing and runny nose. I've had to sleep half sitting up in my recliner most of the last 2 nights. And I'm ready to give up on the yard. If the grass all dies, I'll till it and buy new seed.

Bird,

I'm with you on the cabin fever. I'm so tired of being shut in, and burned out of the outdoors (yes the pun was intended although weak.) Its enough to make one go stir crazy.
