I know how you feel Kyle. The DFW Metro-mess got 1/2" of rain last night and we got hot wind. The only saving grace is it didn't smell like burning cow poo. Don, isn't that toasted cow poo smell supposed to be a Texas aphrodisiac?

Glad you got it out. How did you know about it? Did you see the smoke? With the wind, I can't figure out how you got it out.

How I knew about it? My pager went off. I'm back to responding after my MI. After 6 months I feel 100% back to normal. The wind blew the smoke all over. The first reports were actually 7 miles from the source. The blowing sand also looked like smoke, and the strong wind kept the smoke from going up. It burned for 20 minutes before the location was known. The cow field's drought ridden costal was about only 1/2 inch tall and the wind changed direction several times and calmed down, but it still burned about 2 acres.

Jim it actually smells like a cigarette ash tray.. They do smolder a long time and have a steady rate of burn, I can see how they can be used for a source of heat (except for the smell, unless you are a smoker anyways).

How long does it take for natural grasses to return from a fire like that after the first rain?
Since the soil is so sandy do the rancher's do anything to control erosion after a fire in their fields?

Not long if you get rains.

You have to have rain to get erosion. Good morning dew will bring a bit of coastal grass back, but not much.

I see a lucky few getting some light rain in N Texas!

Hit 100* at my house, weatherman said new record for D/FW, and new record here for 100* + days in a year at 71 days.

Looks like we will have an extreme fire danger state wide, until there is nothing left to burn.

It only got to 99° here after a forecast for 96. Then about 8 p.m., it started to rain, the electricity went off about 8:30 p.m. and didn't come back on until 7:45 a.m. this morning. But I did get about a quarter inch of rain, for which I'm thankful.

It is a horrible smell. Dime box had a bunch of fires early this week. I'm guessing from something dragging on the road causing sparks.

Get your rest Don, I'm worried about today's fire chances. Extreme fire chances, low humidity, high winds. I think some idiot was caught starting some of them.

It only got to 99ï½° here after a forecast for 96. Then about 8 p.m., it started to rain, the electricity went off about 8:30 p.m. and didn't come back on until 7:45 a.m. this morning. But I did get about a quarter inch of rain, for which I'm thankful.

Bird,
Still don't know why you are getting the ( ï ) Alt+0239 in your temp?

I got 99½° by typing 99 then Alt+0189 then Alt+0176 with no spaces between the 99 and the 1/2 and no space between the 1/2 and the degree symbol. The Fonts box at the top just says Fonts and there is no size indicated so it is using the default or whatever you used in your message.
The I with an umlaut really does no harm as most folks ignore it.
I think it would be a lot quicker and less work to just type 99.5 deg.

They always say, " if you want to find the most efficient way to do something, have a lazy guy do it." That's me, I guess!

   / Texas Heat! #1,308
Ron, I didn't put that 1/2 in there. I typed 99 and then with no spaces, I typed "Alt 0176" and it looked right, but then later, it added the other garbage again. So I just now went back and edited out the other stuff.

Nope, no handheld unit; just a soon to be 4 year old HP desktop that came with Windows Vista and I later upgraded (or maybe I should say "downgraded") to Windows 7.

I was just thinking about what Western has been reporting about the potential length of the present drought and before and after 14 April 1935 in regards to erosion by wind. There must have been many wildfires then too that amplified the problem.

We are 10 inches above normal for rain here even though we had a dried out period for a couple months this summer. Everything is now growing green mold.
The weather everywhere appears extreme one way or another. In the big picture it is probably just part of an earth/sun cycle but it sure would be nice
to have some moderation...
Still the best country on earth in my opinion.

Bird,
You definitely upgraded. Vista was a real mess.
If you use Internet Explorer as your main browser IE-9 is much better
than IE-8 too, in case you haven't upgraded yet. Folks still using XP can't use IE-9.
Just my humble opinion. I didn't use personal computers until the advent of Windows 98 so I'm a rookie.

Ron, I got a head start on you, but you've learned more about these contraptions than I have. My first computer was a 32k Color Computer from Radio Shack hooked to a 13" RCA color TV for a monitor and to save anything it went onto a little cassette in a portable cassette player. Then it was a big upgrade to TRS 80 Model IV with a floppy disk, and then I even bought an external 5 meg hard drive that was almost as big as my current desktop computer. It was reconditioned, cost $300, guaranteed a year, and died right on schedule. I also had a daisy wheel printer that did beautiful printing.

As far as the upgrade to Windows 7 . . . well, I had no complaints with Vista myself, but as you know Windows 7 doesn't have Outlook Express which was so much better than this blasted "improved" Windows Mail.

But yes, I am using IE 9. And I still learn a little bit more now and then.

Bird, you basically described the 1st " portable calculator" I ever saw:D:laughing: They where huge!!

My kids use "PDA's"?? They can do anything on them I can do from my PC and it fits in their pocket!!

I like my old HP still running WinXP, have to use the choke and pull the crank a couple of times to get her started, but until I can build my "dream machine" I'll stick with this relic.

Bird,
You must be referring to "Live Mail" which is a stand alone portion of "Windows Live Essentials" I like it from the standpoint of having pop3 mail
written and saved on the hard drive as well as incoming saved on the hard drive like the old Outlook Express. It worked well for a time to also have web mails like hotmail and gmail working the same way, but then an automatic update some months ago messed up hotmail making it eradic and giving various error messages. I finally removed the hotmail from Live Mail and go there from a pinned shortcut on the taskbar. The other features of Live Essentials are very handy if you do much photography and has a great panorama making plugin.
I normally shoot in 16 bit RAW so photoshop is my prime software for processing farm related shots for TBN and thousands of other images.
I enjoy photography and computers hoping they provide good brain exercise.

Since we veered off a little to computers.....On a Mac does anyone know how to put a utube clip on a Keynote slideshow. All the answers on google are not working for me. ????

We went to the State Fair yesterday for opening day. The weather was about perfect, and the Corny Dog was worth the trip.

4am this morning it's 55*, will be closer to 50* by 6am, but the wind and the dry are still with us.

Yep, that's what they call it; sure wish I had Outlook Express back.

We went to the State Fair yesterday for opening day.

The last time we went to the State Fair was 7 years ago. My wife's sister was here from West Virginia and we took her to the Fair. The sister is here again this year and we're planning to go to the Fair Thursday. That's free day for old follks.

Did you check these video tutorials?
You might have to shorten the path depending on what TBN does to it but the key words after going to google videos are "tutorial + MAC + keynote + slideshow"
