Buddy hauling in a 1 ton truck + skidsteer got ticketed for no CDL.... This was earlier this year in Granbury.

I believe it because he was probably over 26k combined GVWR. A lot of the newer dually's are rated above 12,000lb. Some are 12.5k for example which I think is stupid because 14k trailers are very common. Hook a F-350 with a 12.5k GVWR to a 14k trailer and you are over 26k and might as well be in a 18 wheeler in the eyes of the law.

If he gets one more ticket for no CDL, he will never be able to obtain a CDL. This is exactly why I got a Class A CDL to pull my 22,500 lbs. farm tagged gooseneck.........all the grey areas.

Probably not a bad idea but if it is truly farm use and not a grey area you are good to I think 48k pounds with no CDL. In a truck hauling grain from the field to the elevator no worries but a flatbed hauling a piece of equipment they could challenge you on the farm use.

For those that don't know a CDL is a pain in the butt. There is a LOT more to it than just having the license.

Your truck and trailer need commercial inspections not the regular safety inspection.

You need reflective triangles and a fire extinguisher in the truck.

You need a medical card.

You need commercial auto insurance.

You need a DOT number which comes with audits.

You need UCR registration.

You need operating authority.

You need to be part of a random drug testing pool.

Pretty much all this stuff has annual costs.

My RED Mahindra has a RED backhoe on it most of the time. I do a lot of bartering. It could fall into a grey area. Correct, the limit is 48,000 pounds.

Yep. My '05 flatbed is rated at 11,500 so I'm fine with a 14k trailer. If I ever decide to go heavier....might as well go big.

My inspection guy mentioned that the state has asked them to verify that the vin on the registration matches the one on the trailer. That hasn't been an easy task since a lot of the tags are so faded.
