Texas rains, don't this beat all

We're getting no rain here in SC and none predicted in the next 10 days. Blackberries and drying up on the vine. I planted about 1/2 acre of sunflowers which I broadcast in soil 'plowed' with my box blade. Got a couple of showers and they jumped up like you wouldn't believe. Now they are wilting and might not make it. Very frustratiing. I'm sure my B-I-L is worrying about his hay crop. It was huge last year.

He does not use fertilizer. Uses turkey poop. Apparently it can sit in the sun for weeks without diminishing its potency (available nitrogen?). He quit using fertilizer years ago. Downside is that you have to mess with turkey poo. The whole farm (and my place too) smells like a turkey outhouse in April when he spreads it.

After about an inch yesterday, I only got about .08" today. That's some better, but still need a few days of drying.

Bird, we went to the garden yesterday after no rain all day here. We had to start picking pinto beans. It was still so muddy I ended up with "clown shoe" mud caked on my sneakers. We picked one of four rows and got 20 lb of beans. If it doesn't rain again today, we will have to pick more. Some neighbors come back from vacation today, so we may "press" them into helping us pick beans if it doesn't rain more. I've got my fingers crossed.

George, I know just how you feel. That high pressure system that is over you is normally parked right over North Texas this time of year. The weather guy last night said it is what is holding the unstable air over us. So, in a way, your drought is responsible for our wetter than normal weather. Ironic, isn't it.

If it doesn't rain again today

Talk about wishful thinking . . ..;) It does look like the western edge of this storm we've had going the past hour and a quarter might almost miss you. So far I don't see any damage in the immediate area; just thunder, lightning, pretty brisk wind, and lots of rain. However, I've heard some of the covered parking at a business office on the Dallas North Tollway (Dallas Parkway) just south of Parker Road isn't covered anymore. But I don't know the extent of the damage.

Yep!...just 9/10" at Sunset. Sheesh! My poor garden doesn't know what to do with all this rain. Luckily, since there is so much clay, a quick shower just runs off. I don't have any puddle spots. Even so, there is white powdery fungus growing in several places beneath the plants. Mildew and fungus are not supposed to be a problem in N. Tx, but...:(

I'm glad you survived the downpour again. I was thinking of you as I watched the storm travel over southern Denton County. How long do you think it will be before Harvey is postin' pictures of Lucy stuck in the mud?;) :D

Jim, I thought you might be far enough west to miss this rain, and instead, you got even more than I did. I only got .6" and only see a few very small limbs down in my neighborhood; none of mine. Besides the covered parking where our daughter works (she had a day off today, fortunately), the wind took the roof off a Discount Tire Store and I understand a tree fell on the mayor's house in Pilot Point. Wish we'd planted rice this year in the yard instead of grass.

Today is the tenth day in a row that we've had rain. Today it came with a weather waring on the radio about 60mph winds, damaging hail and thunder. It lasted about an hour and we have an inch in our rain gauge.

This really is unbelievable for Texas, isn't it, Eddie? It's rained here 18 of the last 30 days, including every day the last 9. I figure I've gotten 8.3" this month, including .6" today.

everyone can blame me for the rain. When all of the rains started about a month of so, I was also starting to build a house. It is all my fault, because anytime I start a big project it seems to rain me out. LOL...:D

You too? We are starting to add on a new kitchen and a complete reroof (not before time). We have a Hickory tree with limbs overhanging the bedroom roof. The recent winds led to damage to the old shingles and caused a leak. The limbs are past tense and we have "tar" paper tacked down over the shingles.
