Texas rains, don't this beat all

Yesterday we got just under an inch of rain. The lake is flowing and I need to come up with a name for my new creek!!! The water overflow hasn't stoped in over a week.

Wednesday, a storm just about washed me off a roof I'm framing up, but half way home, it was blue skies. I bought some deer corn and catfish food on the way back figuring the storm was over. It started sprinkling just as I got it all unloaded, but then that's all we got. Seven miles away in Hawkins, they got 3 1/2 inches.

We're expecting severe storms today, tomorrow and maybe all week long.

Nobody that I've talked to can remember a May or June like this. It just never stops raining.

My parents have been here a month and have only had three days where the ground has been dry enough to run the tractors. They love to come out here and work the land, but all they've been able to do is read books and watch the grass grow!!!!

We lucked out here and got 3+ days without rain. It was enough time for the crew to tear out an unusable chimney and remove the brick from the area where we are adding a new 12' x 24' kitchen/breakfast area. Got the hole plugged and the wall weather tight the day before we started in to the current rain cycle.

I may have to start a thread about our project. First Phase was a carport now add the kitchen and complete reroof. Basically we are going to build a pole barn over the entire house to create the new roof.

Vernon,

Sounds like an interesting project. I'd sure enjoy hearing about it!!!

I was on a roof today for three hours putting plastic across it during a heavy rain storm. It's coming down so fast today that the roads are flooding and the water is coming off the fields in sheets!! It's raging water in the drainage ditches with allot of them not able to keep up, and water if flowing over the roads.

Tomorrow is predicted to be allot heavier, so in all honesty, I doubt it will even rain.

We were in the sme situation in 1979. We were living on the Dickinson Bayou and were out of town when there was a record rainfall. I have heard reports of as much as 40" in 24 hours in the Alvin area on the watershed.

I was living in Manvel TX (next to Alvin) during 1979 and yes, I remember 30" measured in 24 hours on 1 Saturday and 24" in 24 hours the following Saturday! Actually, I was living with my Aunt and Uncle but my girlfriend was in Victoria so I missed both floods. It was the only time in 10 years that water got in their house. Any full cans of food became invaluable for raising up furniture off the floor.

Can you imagine 54" of rain in a 7 day period??? WOW....

So, here I am in Richardson - - middle of the day, Saturday. We woke up this morning to a light rain. NWS says it's now a 70 percent chance for today & tonight & tomorrow. But, it's not raining now. Driving over yesterday, we had dusk 3 times, once in Shreveport, once in the Longview/Kilgore area & finally here in Richardson. Luckily, only the 1st two 'dusks' had thunderstorms with them. Guess it will hold off till tonight & dump on my brother's 50th. We'll see.
I don't think I've ever seen north Texas look greener this time of year. Too bad you can't package it up & reopen it in the middle of August & Sept.
Small world - - the girl I took to the senior prom in 1959 is a member of the church here & will be there tonight.

Jack, I'm just a little ways northwest of Richardson, got up this morning at 6:30 to find it not raining at the time, but .2" in my rain gauge from sometime during the night, then it started a very light steady shower before 8 a.m. that lasted at least an hour and a half, but only put another .23" in my rain gauge.

Hope your brother has a good combination celebration; 50th wedding anniversary and Father's Day.

Yep, it's going to be the greenest 4th of July EVER in my memory here. Typically there is a burn ban in force by then. Best thing for me is we've not had any BIG rains... just every few days some up to 2 inches.... never has gotten dry at all since it started this year.... cows are plopping all over the place..sign of high protein... they better breed back fast this year!!!

Some years a 50% rain chance means " probably won't"
This year it means " it's gonna rain some, for sure"

I'm not complaining... more folks have gone broke in a drought than from too much rain. I understand rising water and floods as well... grew up on Nueces River... would get cut off from town for a week or more when it flooded.

Yep, except where puddles have stood so long they killed the grass.:D I got another 1.28" last night from a downpour that ended around 9 p.m. So that was about 1.72" yesterday and it sure looks like more coming today.

Oh well, I just put the ribs in the smoker and I've printed out a new recipe that I hope will make some light, fluffy dinner rolls.:)

Jack,

Wonder what time you were on I20 yesterday? Steph and I went to Longview and on the way there, could hardly see with the rain coming down so hard!! There were cars all over the embankment and in the ditches. Accidents were also quite common. We thought about taking Highway 80, but they had two feet of water on the roads in places and there was no telling how long some of them were stranded. Two cars were washed off the road less then ten miles from our house.

The rain gauge at our house is just over 3 inches from Saturdays rains. Tyler Pounds Airport reported 3.4 inches and set a new record for the most rain in one day at Tyler.

Lindale, which is 11 miles West of me reported unofficial rain totals of 5 and 6 inches from yesterdays storms.

Today is expected to drop 1 to 2 inches, but so far it's dry out.

It was cold enough yesterday morning that we both wore jackets!!!!

JACKETS IN JUNE!!!!!!!
