My AC guy's wife told me yesterday that he'd get to me the 1st thing on Monday morning. I didn't question it, but my wife is skeptical since Monday is a Labor Day. If he calls to delay, I'll ask him if I can come to his shop and buy the caps from him. My coop power company pays for one AC checkup each year up to $100. Even if he comes later in the week to check my installation, the service call will be refunded to me if we call it an annual checkup.:)

As a side note, my grandson complained that he had a hard time sleeping last night. He said the blower on the window unit made too much noise. Do you reckon our kids are a bit spoiled these days?

Jim, I bet if you turn the blower off for a night, he may "live with it" the next night:laughing:

To bad you cant find a capacitor locally. Even if in ft Worth, it would almost be worth the drive to guarantee cool air. Of course, on of those portable ones would be nice to have, but they would set you back a couple hundred.

Maybe we're all a bit spoiled. I was 19 the first time I lived, worked, or slept anywhere that had an air-conditioner.

Dennis, I'd happily drive to Ft Worth to pick up a capacitor, but on Sat/Sun/Mon of a holiday weekend, It'd probably just be an exercise in wasting gasoline. I have a very good 18.5k btu window unit in my cabin that I could move to the house temporarily, but I'm a bit indisposed to lifting so soon after my surgery. I'm just caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place right now. Sleeping in our basement is far from ideal, but a whole lot better than sleeping with no AC.

Bird, I also was almost 20 before I had AC on a regular basis (after I got married and moved out). We had one AC in our living room from the time I turned 15, but none in the bedrooms. We felt awful lucky to just have window fans. We never even had a swamp cooler like many people did in those days.

We did have a swamp cooler in the living room from about the time I was 12, but my parents never had any refrigerated air at all in their house, at least until I was in my mid-30s.

jinman; Would you want friends to come lift that A/C unit and place it for ya? Bet we can round up one or two! Just say the word.

   / Texas Spring/Summer Thread #3,508
Thanks Farmgirl and Bird. If it was going to be a long delay like a couple of weeks waiting on parts, I'd consider moving that AC unit. However, for today and tomorrow (maybe) I just can't see doing anything extraordinary. I'd have to run a heavy 220 volt extension cord too. Then putting the AC back in my cabin when the heat pump gets fixed would kinda be a lot of hassle when you consider we have a cool basement with refrigerator, TV, pool table, and bathroom. What more do you need besides cold beer and entertainment?:confused3: Besides, if we got desperate, we could go to the in-laws house in Saginaw. They have two extra bedrooms. Thanks for the offer, but we are far from that point for now.:)

Good deal, jinman! However, if things change, offer still stands on my end, and I'm sure from seeing how nice our friends are on this forum, Bird and others, if we need them, will be there too.

Yes, cold beer, a potty, and entertainment is all one needs to "rough it"!

bindian; Are you sure we aren't going to Oshkosh in 2015? I've got some things I need to tend to here, and they might not be fully dealt with to completion much before Summer 2014. And if you want us to try to go in that RV6, it will have to be 2015, for sure. I have to settle out some other things before I try to buy it. If we go in 2014, we can go commercial, and both drink going up and coming back. Either works for me, so you make the call.

I have another tractor friend that lives within an hour's drive time of Oshkosh, so maybe we can bum a place to stay there for a night. If not, we can sleep on the ground, and find that float plane landing to bathe in, as you suggested elsewhere. I have no problems drying on a pontoon! :cloud9: Anything dealing with float planes will excite me! As we used to say, seaplane flying is the most fun you can have, out of bed! :D

Hey y'all! It is thundering here! Radar shows some showers northwest of me. They may not get here, but it is nice to hear the thunder and fantasize! Maybe I'll get lucky! :D

We weren't allowed to turn the AC on in our house until June 1st. And it was usually shut off on Sept 1st.

I still usually make it to June 1 before I turn it on, and try to turn it off as soon as possible. I don't think it will be off tomorrow though. It has been off a few times during the summer here though. Maybe I grew up to act old, before my time! :confused3:

Glad you can make it for that long. It's funny though what a difference construction and location make. We have a house built in the 1920's that is shaded by large oak trees and has high ceilings and lots of windows. That house can be very pleasant in a lot of hot weather. We only have window units in three rooms and usually only use two of them in the hottest times. It can get cold in the winter but a small flame on the space heaters can keep it very comfortable.

The house where I grew up, which we still have, was built in the 1947 and was never comfortable in hot weather or cold weather when I was living there. It's not shaded and does not have high ceilings and the cross ventelation is non existent.

It has been raining here too. A light rain, but rain, none the less! I think I threw my rain gear away a couple of months ago. Guess I'll go play in the rain and storm. It might feel good!

We had a little lightning and thunder in the distance at 3 a.m. And we got a tenth of an inch or so of rain but now it looks like it's moving south and staying just west of us.
