Guys, I have to tell ya, Brandi is a great friend. Before I sent her the (all too short) note, telling I was still alive, she had done a lot of checking and tracking on me. Really a true friend that will care enough to do that!! I began getting messages from co-workers that they had heard from her, and that she was worried. I was shocked. But after I had time to think about it, as I was lying in bed last night, the more I realized how blessed I am to have people like her that care.

When things slow down a little, I need to make a run to meet up with Brandi. I owe her a round of drinks (or two)!

Doggone it, it is after 0500. I am behind again! Y'all take care!

PS. Jinman, I want to hear about your tomatoes when you get to eat them. Mine are still GREEN! My first taste of home grown tomatoes will have to be vicariously through you!

Ought to be interesting. I don't think I've ever eaten, or even heard of anyone eating, radishes other than fresh ones.

Before moving back to town, I pickled my own okra. But now it's so cheap in those big half gallon jars at Sam's Club that I wouldn't go to the trouble of making my own. And I do like pickled okra, but my wife won't eat okra except fried.

I also like pickled asparagus but I haven't seen any of that in the grocery stores.

You can put those green tomatoes to good use, too. Drop a couple of those in the blender with an avocado or two, jalapeno, some cilantro, garlic, lime juice, a tablespoon or so of sour cream, and a little salt and pepper. Makes an awesome green dip that they serve at a Mexican restaurant we frequent down here. Serve that up with your drink or two, and you and Bindian will be happy campers.

I have never heard of pickled asparagus

In the late 70s/early 80s we were friends with the couple next door and she had a sister who was a school teacher somewhere in the state of Washington. And that school teacher had a boyfriend who was a commercial asparagus farmer. So when she'd come to visit in the summer, she'd bring cans of asparagus with no labels; some regular canned asparagus and some pickled. I have no idea where he had it canned, but that's the only pickled asparagus I've eaten and it sure was good.

Don, we shop quite a bit at Sam's Club; been members since the first one was built in Dallas, but never been a Costco member.

Does anyone know how many asparagus plants a family needs if you want to pick a bundle's worth at one time (to have enough for everyone)?

We planted 8 root sets and so far only 5 or 6 have come up. They supposedly are like 2 year old root stock from TSC. I know it will take a couple more years to get decent buds. But how many should I have planted?

Kyle. We started with 20 sets back in the early 90's, after 3 years we got more than 4 of us could eat at one sitting. Gave allot away since at the time we didn't have a way to store it long. ( I struggle with frozen asp:laughing

Each of my root sets produces about 5 asparagus over the course of about 3 weeks. I don't know if this is a good average overall. They have been in the ground 2 years. Next year I'll start eating them.

What is best soil for asparagus? During time between planting and harvesting do you need to do anything? Cut them off or ??? I raly want to try planting some. Is it too late for this year to get started. Sun, shade or both?

The local garden show on KLBJ in Austin was talking about asparagus today. They said to get the beds ready now, but don't plant until December or January.

aTm maintains planting schedules by county for fruits and vegetables. You might want to look that up.

Spent most of the day mowing the 7-8 acres around house with our JD Zero Turn. Quit about 7:30 and jumped in shower. When I got out of shower it was raining and had a nice 20 minutes of good rain. Looked at radar and it was a small cell that passed right over us. Rain gauges are down by ranch buildings but, guessing about .2 inches.

Really cooled off by about 10 degrees and the baby deer (fawns) are running all over the place. They are either full stop or full speed! Most are 3-4 weeks old now. I've only seen one set of twins this year, we had at least two sets last year.

Another great day at the ranch!

Jinman is the one I'm following with Asparagus. I didn't think it grew in Texas. My soil is sand so I add a lot of compost. Mine has about 50% shade. I have been letting the Asparagus green/branch out to get the root base established. I thought they were dead after the drought but they came back up after a rain. After the storms last week all the stalks blew over but they are still green. The branched out stalks start to die off after about 2 months - I just remove the brown stalks and keep them weeded. Next spring we will eat them as they come up.

Just check my red potatoes, I thought they were dead but it looks like I have about a pound of potatoes on each plant - no water, no fertilizer. I just planted 8 pounds of cut up seed potatoes in the sand and thew a bale of alfalfa hay over the 98 pieces after dusting them with my wood burning stove ashes. 96 plants came up.

That sounds like a good tater crop Don. I cant seem to grow potatoes in my clay

We got another 5/8 inch on Friday. We had some rain Saturday, but I never got around to checking the rain gage. Too busy putting up horse fence.
